my name is lindsay chervinsky. i'm the executive director of the george washington presidential library here at mt. vernon. and i'm delighted to welcome you to the 2024 george washington symposium entitled founding fellows ten years of academic excellence. so this annual event is one of mt. vernon's longest running programs. it is now in its 29th year, which is amazing. it is made possible by a generous endowment by the barrow foundation and we are grateful to their ongoing support. the george washington presidential library opened its doors in 2013, so we are now technically in its 11th year. i had the excellent fortune of being a fellow in the library, and through this fellows program in the. 2015 to 2016 academic year and it was the most enriching intellectual experience, both because i got to see such cool old stuff and do incredible, historic research, but also be surrounded by people who were intellectually curious, who asked a great questions, who could engage in converse fashion that lifted up the quality o

that's called the founders in their infinite wisdom, written with our friend of the show, historian lindsaystitution's role in what we're seeing right now. it's a living. >> document, but not with. >> a built in buzzer. >> exactly. >> and then also congress, which right now actually does seem. >> inclined not. >> to do anything. >> yeah. the constitution obviously is one that we're checking. i mean, we hear we heard senator chris murphy talk about the constitutional crisis, where we're literally seeing power grabs from the presidency. which is not unique to this president, though he will go farther. he's proven it over and over, right, that he'll grab the power so long as someone else, notably congress and the courts, don't check him. we were taught, since we're seven years old, we live in a system of checks and balances. are the checks there? are they being carried out or are they just being used right now in a, in a in an instance where for political expediency. right. you go do president. what we can't do here in congress or. >> we. >> don't even. >> necessarily want to put our names att

so fiona lindsay and judith dancer will continue as co-chairs coletti lihi as treasurer and myself as case secretary. and then our more exciting news is that case has received a three year capacity building grant from meta fund for strengthening and sustaining the overall infrastructure of case with a focus really on racial equity and systems change and enhancing the engagement and advocacy within african-american black latin x and pacific islander communities and those organizations serving older adults and disabilities. so that grant is just beginning. so we're really looking forwarding looking forward to partnering with matta on that work and with the larger kind of case community and we'll share updates as that moves forward. and that's all i have so i'm happy to answer any questions. >> the commissioners are there any questions? >> well just congratulations on the grant and welcome. >> i haven't seen you before so so many new people. this is so exciting. i was just wondering i don't know if you mentioned it how much was the grant? >> so it's 300,000 over three years. so it'll giv

i listen to a long discourse by james lindsay who was speaking about the marks of the acacian of educationd of basic academics they are being taught how to become essentially activists and activism. and it's concerning to me and i was curious if you had any more information on that subject. >> so i believe you're referring to scl or social emotional learning which is a set of practices that have grown in k-12 schools that advocates say are designed to help students manage their emotions and behavior. and that conservative critics say are a distraction from regular academics reading, writing and arithmetic. i would have to look at the particular examples that you referred to to really focus on that. host: daniel in pennsylvania, a democrat line. caller: i want your guest to address lobbying efforts and soft moaning the goes into public schools. and in addition to your past guest about farming and soft money lobbying efforts that keep the chemicals in our food. host: we will take the education part of that. >> they're certainly spending, political spending around education and if there isn't
