but the other participant in today's oval office meeting, senator lindsey graham, charged u.s. policy towards syrian president bashar al assad has been a debacle for two years. >> we urged the president to up his game and inform the american people. what does it mean if assad wins and the opposition loses? >> the president appears to have gotten the message, coming up with a strategy aides are calling flood the zone. the commander in chief was working the phones sunday along with the vice president. on tuesday secretary of state john kerry and defense secretary chuck hagel will join martin dempsey testifying. then kerry will be joined by a classified hear with james clapper. most note worthy, there were no democratic lawmakers at the white house today. his own party is not on board. >> we want there to be some consequences. what is that? is that just going to war? is that bombing? is that killing more people? i'm not -- i'm not there yet. >> veteran democrat charlie wrangle said today it was embarrassing for the president to have drawn the red line then let kerry go out on a li

senators john mccain and lindsey graham met with the president. mccain who has long been in support of taking military action in syria said lawmakers must act. >> if a resolution like this was rejected after the president of the united states has already committed to action, the consequences would be catastrophic. >> mccain said he's meeting with the president with candid and he stressed the very importance of degrading the assad's regime capabilities and upgrading those of the opposition. the president has a lot of work still ahead of him. >> senators john mccain and lindsey graham at the white house monday to hear an people directly from president barack obama. they say his plan doesn't go far enough. they want him to topple the assad government. the president said that's not his plan. what he wants to do, launch cruise missiles add syrian military targets, sending a warning message to president bashar al assad. the senators seemed to indicate they might vote for authorization if the president agrees to give more help to the opposition. >> i thi

so i don't think lindsey graham and other folks are updating their talking points. they are acting as if iran hasn't changed when the relation that's when the ble is that there are all of these positive signals and hopefully the -- they are acting as if iran hasn't changed when the reality is that iran is showing all of these positive signals and hopefully washington will be looked take advantage of that. -- will be able to take advantage of that. as you probably know, congress is in the process of debating the 2014 budget. and all the attention is focusing on republican plans to permanently defund obamacare. but they are also the process of product -- the passing a bill to cut the food stamps act over the next 10 years. the nutrition of form and opportunity act will be cut by twice as much as a proposed "farmville". -- proposed farm bill. numerous others will have their benefits reduced. all of this is in addition to significant cuts that will begin in november. i was joined earlier with the director policy and advocacy as well as research at the federation of prot
