lindsey reiser has more. >> reporter: tonight, the debate over masks now centering on kids after theeased summer camp guidelines. the agency now says children and staff who haven't yet been vaccinated should wear masks when indoors. outside, they can lose the masks, except in areas with a high number of cases, crowded spaces, or prolonged close contact. if all campers and staffmembers are fully vaccinated, no masks or social distancing are required. dr. monica gandhi says she supports the camp guidelines but hopes the cdc will change come fall. >> i hope that my child's school is no masks, no distancing, no cohorting, and normal in the fall. >> reporter: and that there are social consequences to masks. >> it's a lot about learning about how to form your vowels and learning about, when you're younger, how to form your ways of speech. >> reporter: the cdc currently recommends universal masking and social distancing in schools. georgia is the latest state to restrict school mask mandates following texas, iowa, and idaho. >> i think that the cdc guidance should specify a certain metric,

let's check in with lindsey reiser on the border of north and south carolina. .s you have been out there, i'm wondering if you got a better sense of why these folks didn't believe these warnings that said hey, don't panic buy. everything is going to be okay. >> chuck, nobody's admitted to me they're panic buying. they're blaming everybody else, all of the other panic buyers, is saying they are seeing people fill up gasoline bags. and we saw the product consumer safety commission yesterday warning against that on twitter, which is unfathomable. but we thought the issue might be alleviated somewhat when we saw the pipeline reopened last night and anecdotally we thought that first thing this morning as well. there were a stretch of four key gas stations that were all out. this particular qt got another truckful. that only lasted five hours. we did not even see it, incredibly long lines down the street, but we saw a lot of trucks filling up, penske and others. and there are other measures being taken. transit system locally are offering free rides and we know the fed

nbc's lindsey reiser at there. jake ward is ten miles away at the shooter's house. nine more families never going to be the same. we know at least some of the victims worked at that rail yard where you are standing. what have you been able to learn about the victims? >> reporter: yesterday we were told that eight had died. then a ninth victim died overnight at the hospital. some, if not all, are vta employees at the valley transportation authority. they have been essential employees this entire pandemic, making sure people get to work, get to doctor's appointments on time. we are showing pictures right here. the ages of the victis range from 29 to 63. it was shift change at the time that this took place. people from the midnight shift and the day shift were all here. we know at least one victim was taken to the local trauma center where that victim died. we are learning about the heroics of some of the victims, including one who likely saved the lives of some his co-workers. listen to what family members said about their heroic efforts. >> in the last moments, he wa

our own lindsey reiser is at the scene of the shooting. let me start with you. and i want to start with this clarification on a timeline of yesterday's events because even earlier this morning on the "today" show, it seemed as if authorities weren't fully convinced they knew for sure that he acted alone. what do we know? >> chuck, we have some developments here on scene. just a few seconds ago we saw the santa clara sheriff lori smith actually walk back towards the scene with several other deputies as well as public information officer. unclear exactly what the sheriff is maybe going to look at or who the sheriff is going to talk 20, but we will be working to find out those details. meanwhile, there are a lot of details trickling in about what happened here yet at the vta facility. sheriff's officers kwon fronted the suspect and he turned the gun on himself, no shots exchanged between the sheriffs and suspect. and he knew where his co-workers would be, and this is a heartbreaking sound, because he went room to room and victims were found in two different rooms.

i want to go first to lindsey reiser. what's the latest on the investigation? >> stephanie, we're learning more and more new details of the sheriff here, really painting a picture of the heart-stopping moment, devastating moment the shooting took place yesterday morning. we're learning when officers first got here to the scene, shots were still being fired. in fact they're running through the hallways yelling sheriff so the suspect would know they're encroaching on him. when they got into the room he was and confronted him, that is when the suspect took his own life. deputies did not exchange gunfire with the suspect. we're also told, by the way, we should mention the sheriff's office is in close proximity, really across the street next door and the sheriff is crediting those officers and deputies who ran into danger and say that quick action likely ended up saving lives. we should also mention the suspect was using two handguns and 11 loaded magazines. those handguns were semiautomatic handguns and the suspect went from building to building shooting his victim

that's where we find msnbc weekend anchor, lindsey reiser. lindsey, good morning. we know another victim died overnight. we know the identity there. what more can you tell us about what we know since the shooting took place? >> willie, definitely a sad morning beginning here to the day, here in san jose. as you mentioned, a ninth victim dying at the hospital overnight. and late last night, we learned the names and the ages of the victims. we are going to show you those now. and the ages range from 29 to 63. and all -- some, if not all, are vta employees. and this took place, willie, during shift change. so workers from the midnight shift and workers from the day shift were there at the same time. and the victims were taken to a local trauma center where, again, a ninth victim died overnight. we're still working to find out exactly how many people were hurt in this massacre. we know that the sheriff said the proximity of the sheriff's office likely saved lives. it's practically right across the street. and we're learning more about the shooter. 57-year-old samuel ca
