nbc's lindsey reiser joins me now from savannah, lindsey, what's the biggest concern where you are right now? >> reporter: chris, we have seen on and off heavy rain, some stronger winds. you can see some white caps here on the savannah river. we are actually expected to see the worst of the winds later this evening. the governor of georgia declared a state of emergency, and he gave us a briefing here on what some areas of georgia have already seen when it entered the state as a category 1 hurricane this morning. let's go ahead and listen to what he said. >> we had multiple counties in the affected area that are seeing winds in the 70 to 80 miles per hour and some gusts up to 90. we know by radar it looks like we may potentially have in some areas 9 to 10 inches of rain. the good thing is this is a narrow storm and is very fast-moving, so it's not sitting on us and dumping even more rain than that at one time. >> reporter: another positive factor, in addition to it being fast-moving, it's happening during the daytime hours, not nighttime, which is obviously safer for folks. so here in sav

i'm lindsey reiser reporting from new york in for ana cabrera. we begin with hurricane idalia. the storm intensified overnight, now expected to strengthen further and make landfall in florida as a major hurricane, packing dangerous winds and a potential 12-foot storm surge. today, millions are under hurricane warnings and evacuation orders are now in place in more than 20 counties. nbc news meteorologist angie lassman is following the storm's track and priscilla thompson is in cedar key, florida. >> we have seen it strengthening this morning, lindsey with our most recent update now category 1, of course. that happened earlier this morning. but winds up to 80 miles per hour and moving north at 14 miles per hour. you can see it has become a little healthier when you try to look at exactly where the eye is. it starts to clear a little bit. that gives us indication it is getting its act together, becoming more organized as it enters these very warm waters of the gulf of mexico and starts to push some rain on shore for the state of florida today. we have dealt with heavy rains acros

. >> lindsey reiser, thank you for your ongoing coverage. we have breaking news out of st.ur's drive from tampa. officials now say that their fire team has rescued more than 75 people. remember the warning was if you're one of those zones that was prone to flooding, get out. but not everybody does. so those 75 people were from areas, obviously, with the most severe flooding. the government shared this video on twitter of emergency officials moving through flood waters in a boat as the rain pours down around them risking their own safety to bring others to safety. joining me by phone is mayor of st. pete beach on the barrier island west of st. petersburg, and that is one of the areas in the mandatory evacuation zone. mayor, thank you so much for joining us. what do you know about the safety of your residents? did most people leave? are you doing rescues? give us an update. >> yeah, for the most part most of our residents left. we're in evacuation zone a, which is the highest risk for flooding and we had severe flooding here with these first 4 to 5 feet so most of our residen
