i'm linsey davis. we begin tonight with the search for suspects in the deadly mass shooting overnight at a popular entertainment district in birmingham, alabama. four people were killed and 17 injured outside a cigar and hookah lounge. authorities say at least one person was targeted in the shooting. the other victims were caught in the cross fire. a car drove to the area and multiple gunmen opened fire and then fled the scene. police recovered about 100 shell casings. investigators are working with the fbi and other law enforcement agencies urging anyone with information to contact authorities. the city's mayor says the shooting is part of the gun violence crisis in america, saying, quote, when america gets a cold, it's possible that birmingham gets the flu. we do want to warn you, some of the video images may be disturbing. abc's stephanie ramos leads us off tonight. >>> tonight, police are calling the deadly gunfire that tore through a popular night life district in birmingham, alabama, wounding mor

here now david muir and linsey davis. good evening.thank you forjoining us for tonight's abc news presidential debate — not just the first debate for these two as presidential candidates, but the first time these two have ever met. that was about as friendly as it got as they came to debate in philadelphia, the so—called city of brotherly love. not so much. she's a marxist. everybody knows she's a marxist. people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom. but soon they got on to issues such as immigration, a key concern for voters and one that could be a strength for the former president, though he chose to focus on unsubstantiated claims about migrants eating people's pets. in springfield, they're eating the dogs, the people that came in. they're eating the cats. they're eating... the vice president could scarcely contain herself. ..of the people that live there. moderators attempted to fact check the former president on several occasions during the debate. abc news did reach out to the city manager there. he told

. >> abc news anchor linsey davis challenging the vice president on her changing positions. >> vice presidentfracking. now you don't. you wanted mandatory government buyback programs for assault weapons. now your campaign says you don't. you supported decriminalizing border crossings. now you're taking a harder line. i know you say that your values have not changed. so then why have so many of your policy positions changed so my values have not changed. >> and i'm going to discuss every one of the at least every point that you've made tonight was crucial for both candidates. >> but for harris, it was her biggest stage yet, as she introduces herself to voters. with recent polls showing nearly a third of voters say they still don't know enough about her. while tonight was her first presidential debate, she did not hold back. >> when you then talk in this way in a presidential debate and deny what over and over again, our court cases, you have lost because you did in fact lose that election. it leads one to believe that perhaps we do not have in the candidate. to my right the temperament or or t

i'm linsey davis.g news as we come on the air tonight, the secret service says president donald trump is safe after shots are fired at his golf course in west palm beach, florida. it is investigating the incident as an apparent assassination attempt. trump was golfing at the time and he heard popping sounds. an assault-style rifle was found at the scene and the suspect appeared to be aiming the gun at the former president. authorities say the suspect fled in a vehicle and was apprehended by law enforcement in a neighboring county president biden and vice president harris were briefed and the former president was not hurt. a firefighter at an event was killed and two other bystanders was injured. it led to the resignation of the secret service director. tonight the secret service has increased security around the white house and the vice president's residence. abc chief justice correspondent pierre thomas leads us off with the very latest. >> reporter: tonight, another security scare inful voing former
