josh lipton as the story. >> we have the opportunity to get to see what is going on in every country. >> reporter: cisco's ceo john chambers know china represents a big opportunity for the tech bellwether with an it market growing strongly. the problem is whether the chinese government is going to allow cisco to capitalize on that opportunity. china now accounts for about 5% of cisco's total revenue or some $2 billion, but business there has been tough with orders dropping quarter of quarter. what is the problem in china? call it the snowden effect. cisco executives say disclosures about the surveillance activities by the nsa are spooking chinese customers and the chinese state media is stoking those concerns saying that beijing should punish what it calls the pawns of the u.s. government, specifically pulling to cisco, as well as microsoft, google and yahoo. analysts say china's real intention in the war of words is promoting chinese tech companies over foreign rivals. >> this is an opportunity to say we have no concerns about our products and understand how those are made and at the

i'm josh lipton, cnbc in silicone valley. >>> and let's talk more about cisco.oining me on the phone from toronto, ross healy. and a fiscal shareholder. ross, you see cisco is turning a corner here. you're very encouraged by the numbers. why is that? >> okay. look, first of all, when you're looking to make money in this market, what do you want to do is find a company with strong balance sheet, strong cash flow. it's like a cheap valuation, a little bit of a dividend, of course. if you can get it. then, what you have to look for because when these stocks have gone basically for this entire bull market is not really done very much. you're looking for stocks that are starting to make a turn in business. i think quite clearly, if everything was clicking on all cylinders for cisco, the stock would be closer to 40 than it is to the 24 or so that it's trading at today. so now you want to wait. where is the evidence that there's a turn coming in the company? and in the call today, it underlined -- or yesterday, rather, chambers underlined that there are some turns comi

our josh lipton in our bay area bureau has a preview of just that. josh?kelly, the street isn't expecting much from the tech bellwether. let's get to the numbers. analysts looking for eps here of 53 cents on revenue of $12.1 billion. that would actually be a drop of about 2% on the top line. on the conference call, investors will want to hear more about the i.t. spending environment, new products, and how business is doing in china, which does account for about 5% of cisco's total revenue or some $2 billion. but business in china has been tough. last quarter, orders dropped 8%. cisco saying disclosures about surveillance activities by the nsa are concerning some chinese customers. the bigger question, though, for cisco, that changing corporate i.t. landscape, specifically the rise of software-defined networking. technology that lets users run networks on software and relatively inexpensive hardware rather than the more expensive routers and switches cisco offers. we're going to have cisco's numbers in about 15 minutes. back to you. >> josh, thank you very

job lipton is at headquarters in mountainview for a look inside the business culture there. josh? >> yeah, tyler, when you think of google's culture and what defines it, part of the answer is really in google's ipo letter. remember that's where cofounders larry page and sergei wanted to create an atmosphere of create activity, challenges. >> you're expected to take risks. larry page is constantly in meetings, saying to people, no, no, no, think bigger. >> now google likes to say also it's the people that really define the company. some argue, though, that here at google, while everybody might be equal, some are still more equal than others. >> internally it's still very much a technology company and engineering company. i think that's who larry page prizes the most sort of internally and i think that flowing down through the culture. if you're an engineer, i think you're going to be held in much higher esteem than a salesman. >> now perhaps the value that we all associate with google the most is that informal mantra don't be evil, but as google transforms into this global powerhou
