happened. fbi and secret service are looking into how much personal information was information and stolen and took it after a series of sign's tax at jp morgan and as many as four other big banks. early reports suggest that the hackers may have originated in russia but federal officials are not confirming those claims just yet. what exactly happened? how did it happen? how do you prevent this? stephanie, how can just an individual, regular humans, protect ourselves from a country like russia hack nothing to big banks. >> it the is tough. there is not a whole lot you can do. if someone has the the intent to break in the system and time and resources, they will do it. what we can do is be more careful. in at least one of those five bank hacks they are attributing it to one of the employees, who down loaded something or clicked on some kind of a link through their e-mails. so pfishing is a huge way that hackers take advantage of the situation and it is imperative not to cling those links. >> well, what exactly does that mean? they didn't mean to do it. >> they didn't mean to do it, right. an e-mail could have come across their december thank looked official and said hey, we need to you get in touch with your bangor we need to you do something like that a lot of e-mails. they take the form of something that looks like an official notification and people click and they trying to down play that just a little bit because a gigabyte is not the that much but it could be thousands of gigabytes, tens of thousands of gigabytes and we do know that account information and credit card information was stolen. >> so what should i do right now before i go to work or when i get to work on my computer. >> well, check to see if your bank has two factor awe then case. what that means is either they will ask you for security questions, so you can add up to three to five security questions what is your dog's name, where did you grow up, do those questions, add those in or if they ask you if you want to receive a text message with a security code that you have to go back and enter. it is a extra step but will protect you. >> would you advise everybody to do that today. >> if it is available, yes. if it is available on your bank account. my account does have a an extra security question and i actually enter it in every single time because sometimes as well on your home computer it will ask you if you want to save this information. so that you don't have have to enter it again. the don't save it. enter it every single time. if you save it your account becomes your throat in it oral area, and if you get a close look, of what the doctor do it is a vocal cord right there maybe she had a polyp, who knows. they probably used an instrument like this which is this ridged scope where you go down and you are able to do some procedure. either take a polyp off or whatever. but to do that you need to give the the patient sedation. the the issue is what we know is she stopped breathing, and then went into cardiac arrest. >> she would be awake, they don't put her all the way out. >> they sedate the patient. in one would want to have that down your throat. >> of course no but i with want to be put all the way out. >> the question is, why did she stop breathing. did she stop breathing because she got too much sedation? did she stop breathing because she had, a spasm where the area is where the vocal cord are it closed up? did she have a heart attack, have have a heart problem? no one knows. i certainly don't know. the critical question to ask right now are one, how long was she out. how much time went that she was not getting oxygen to her brain. that is a critical question. >> oh, man. >> they must have been so scared. so this could be done in a doctor's office or a surgery center. >> it is done all the time. in talking with our ear, nose and throat specialist at penn, bottom line is it is a very safe procedure. you have to take into account she was 81. she may have had some other medical problems, who knows. what ivoried the only thing she had was osteoporosis. so, the bottom line is that they called 911. they brought her to the hospital. she's in the intensive care unit. now she's in a medically induced coma and i'm trying to figure out why that is. i don't have enough information. >> excessive. >> welshing when you have liquidity. you usually go overboard and injecting liquidity. and the number, the emerging-market crises in the bubble and the dot com bursting, all of those caused the fed to lower rates. along and that is when greenspan woke up so morning saying, we're japan. we are heading for deflation. we need to lower interest rates to 1%. you cannot tell me -- bernanke all denies it. that this had an impact because the real estate boom was worldwide. will guess what? the dollar is a worldwide currency. if the fed lowers rates to 1%, it is going to have an impact all around the world. flowed easy money that during that time was just unbelievable. so, i blame. there are a lot of people to blame here. and you also have to blame wall street. wall street just walked into it. in a deregulatory environment, which was there at the time, wall street has to be held accountable for their excessive creativity, but ultimately, my argument is that bad government policy creates bad business practices. if government sets the right rules like they getting canada and australia, you would not have had this crisis like you did. so, there are plenty of people to blame. yes? >> yes, sir. if i can have your view on this. as we look at economic strategy, america has been -- spent -- in by foreign years powers. of late, the chinese wanted buy 50,000 acres of farmland. do you see the shift from trying to conquer america to controlling it through an economic system? >> yes. and this is been an issue that has gone around for years. certainly it was one i remember very well when japan was the powerhouse in the 1980's and sony and everyone else coming along, buying a polup hollywood, rockefeller center. they have had their head handed to them for engaging that. find the same situation, but yes, any country that has a lot of foreign growing veryis rapidly, you have to diversify. i am very much a supporter of open capital markets. the minute you start rejecting capital and so forth, you had better be careful because you will get unintended consequences. so it can be a very dangerous game. so, i would not want to impose capital restrictions at all, but yo ucu send out a few warnings about maybe you ought to look at the japanese as an example of something. do you want to go down that route? because it has happened before. yes. the financialss crisis because i read robert shiller's " irrational exuberance." that came out in 2004. >> the the second addition. exuberance," perfect timing. it came out in early 2000, right at the top of the stock market. the second edition came out in 2005, just two years before the real estate bust started. >> with that in mind, but that is not my question. my question is how federal reserve policy and ben bernanke, because ben bernanke followed the friedman playbook because he was a big fan of monetary history. he injected all of this liquidity into the banking system. >> friedman would have done the same thing. >> but the money did not go anywhere. we have nowrecovery came about because of the automatic stabilizers and the stimulus. -- said the stimulus should have been $1400 billion instead of$700 billion. i think that ben bernanke changed his mind when he went before congress and said we need to get stimulus but we cannot get stimulus to the congress. >> first of all, ben bernanke didn't fol-- did follow friedman 's rulebook on monetary policy. however, did not follow the playbook on fiscal policy because all of the friedman studies show that fiscal policy imperfect, unable to achieve the goals that he, you want to achieve. so friedman would have been very much against tarp. you also to talk about waste. most people agree that tarp was wasted in many ways, although, some purchases of securities by the fed and tarp have been paid off and that has been a positive thing that came out of that. so, let's not forget that the go

liquidity for so many years, now qe is not only the on way to provide liquidity, but that's tapering on the floor significantly. now people are buying in anticipation that the baton will be handed off to the ecb. all they have been done is jawboning. that's been very effective, because the u.s. has been providing this liquidity. draghi, if all he continues to do is jawbone, that won't fly with the liquid going down from the u.s. so i think it would be important that the ecb not only announces a qe program, but a significant one. the market has had this huge run for really the last two years. >> still a lot of unbeliever out to quote vampire weekend and the band. how do you convince them? change your tune a bit. it's friday going into a long weekend. >> one thing that nobody can ever explain. it seems around all long weekends the market seems to rally going into it and coming out of it. more than that, of course, if you want to be positive, you look at what the economy is doing right now. it's improving on so many different fronts. you look at the citi bank economic surprise index. that has broken out filesly here in the last few weeks and already been rising through august. the one question, of course, is whether that -- just because it's getting better, does it really justify the 56% move or rally we've had

one day the company, the contractor they used to pump this liquid -- they used a, option of liquids to try to hydraulically fracture to shoot high pressure at the rock. one day the use way too much water by accident. they use 99.5% water to try to get natural gas out of this well. low in the hold that actually produced a pretty good amount of natural gas, nothing dramatic but pretty impressive amounts. everybody in the industry said it's a one-off, it's a fluke. go back to these expensive kind of homes and other kinds of methods and concoctions. steins berger said we are not making much progress with those other kinds of ways of fracking and water is much deeper than the foam so let's make it work. let's see if we can make it work and do trial and error. the crackers -- "the frackers" is about trial and error and persistence and resilience. that is what they did over the next year or so. they focused on it and worked on it and found a way to get natural gas to come from shale. berger and his team change the company because they were able to sell the company a few years later for $2 bil
