thanks, lisa. breaking news updating a devastating fire at a nightclub in brazil. it's now one of the deadliest nightclub fires in more than a decade. 245 people have died at the kiss nightclub in the southern city of santa maria. another 200 are injured in the club. it is said to hold as many at 2,000 people. the bodies have been taken to a public gymnasium for identification. the cause of the fire is not yet no one but a band was performing at the club at the time the fire broke out. here in the bay area a violent night on the peninsula results in two shootings, one fatal and one involving a child. police are piecing together details in two different locations within blocks of one another, in menlo park and east palo alto. they also occurred within an hour of each other. in the latest incident a victim died after being shot in the head at capital avenue and bell street. east palo alto police identify the victim as 21-year-old lamont coleman of east palo alto. and just blocks away at a mcdonald's

here's abc's lisa stark. >> reporter: they're welcoming guessing with champagne and hand sanitizerer. the hotel is worried about the flu. >> reporter: some 600,000 people are expected to jam the nation's capital, flying in on planes, packing hotels, rubbing elbows at the balls. over the course of a flu season, as many as 20% of americans get sick. do the math. that could mean thousands of potentially infected visitors. >> a person with the flu can spread the virus to those around them. if i'm by myself, no worries. but on monday, this spot near the u.s. capitol will look like it did four years ago. packed with people who come from around the country. there's a dangerous zone. if someone neezs those droplets can spread six feet. in a packed crowd, more than a dozen people could be in harm's way. the risk is the greatest from the smallest among us. a child's sneeze can spread millions of virus particles, ten times more than an adult because adults have a more developed immune system. doctors say take common sense precautions, get the flu shot, wash your hands, and just as important -- >

up until three years ago 43 old lisa m. russo didn't think she needed the flu vaccine. my kids were healthy but then in november 2009 she got the flu. chills body aches, headaches. after a visit to her doctor she was rushed to the hospital where she spent 45 days in the i see you she was put on a ventilator, dialysis and an induced coma that paralyzed her from the neck down. her family waited and prayed not knowing if she survived. my husband didn't know if he was going to have a wife my kids didn't know what they would have a mother. lisa did wake up but that wasn't the end she had to spend another months in rehab learning how to move her body again. dr. julie with the chicago department of health says that could have all been prevented with a simple vaccine if you haven't been vaccinated already this year, she says you should especially because of the strain that is going around. in the past that virus has been associated with more severe so there have been more hospitalizations and deaths, lisa inter family now get vaccinated every year. i would never want anybody to
