lisa stark joins me from washington and lisa, eyes are on new york city as they deal with this tragedy. the leading police union says the mayor has blood on his hands. >> reporter: right. >> the mayor responded to that accusation today. what did he have to say? >> michael as you know, mayor deblasio has a contentious relationship with the police union. he was asked about that comment today whether he has blood on his hands. deblasio says it is not time to fully respond to that comment by the head of the police union. >> i think we need to honor the families by not getting into a back-and-forth. there will be a time for me to talk about my own personal views. i will simply say i think what he said was a mistake and it was wrong. but i'm not going to elaborate because we need to focus on the families. we need to focus on healing. >> reporter: and police commissioner bill bratton said police have agreed to tone down their rhetoric. mayor deblasio said he will attend the funerals of the two officers. many have said he should stay away, but out of respect for these families, michael we are

diving enthusiast lisa costello, a single mom, is on vacation and decides to go out on a boat to seehins with professor lee tefley, a man who shares her enthusiasm for diving. >> it was a really calm day, really clear. and we saw some activity maybe ten miles out. >> as we got closer, it turned out it was a group of pilot whales. incredible. >> whales are not normally social animals. so costello and tepley can't believe how close those whales are swimming to their boat. the professor and the diving enthusiast decide to seize the opportunity and get in the water for a closer look. >> they're very playful right now. they're all around us. i got in the water first, and i was just floating there, and one male came right up to me and stopped. so i looked at him in the eyes and he looked at me, and i went above the water, and he went above, and we did this bobbing thing with this eye contact a good five minutes. >> as soon as i entered the water, a very large pilot whale swam right up to my camera, and this is something i'd never seen before because pilot whales are wild animals. >> but th

lisa joins us live on the phone with more. lisa? >> reporter: we're in the mission district. this group has really [ inaudible ] -- distance but the entire thing started around 2:00 this afternoon. thousands of people were in the street on market heading down towards union square. they kept going and ended at the plaza. there's a very large police presence. sheriff's deputies were there. they were armed. but at that point, things were very peaceful. there were a lot of speakers. there were a lot of people expressing sympathy and their views on what's been happening in their country and people who were locally saying they were victims of violence at the hands of police officers. the entire event ended around 5:00 and the group started to leave. there were also families there. but at that point, several hundred people left civic center plaza, educated down ellis and ended over at union square and they were an aggressive group according to a lot of witnesses. they were chanting and yelling at police officers. officers did follow them the entire route. they stopped in front of we
