lisa: u.s.lection kicking into gear on thursday with the first presidential debate followed by the first round of french elections sunday and if that was not enough the u.k. election next week. peter tchir writing "while the wildcard risk is difficult to identify, there is a real sense of global unease. a lot of opportunities for troublemaking and fewer reasons for the bad actors not to behave badly. markets and our assessment are underpricing these risks." peter joins us now. we talked about the options, i have been hyper folk -- we talked about the auctions but we've not seen the bond vigilantes come to the table and express their fear. how can you express concern in a market that cannot identify risk and loses if they bet on them? peter: i have been avoiding the treasury market as a way to express geopolitical concerns. normally we would get the flight to safety but anytime we get geopolitical elevation everyone gets concerned about safety. we have been playing it from the commodity markets.

lisa: right. [laughter] jonathan: apple is down in the premarket, it was down yesterday by close to 2% at the close. unveiling long-awaited ai features. they've got a list of them. we reported that here on bloomberg. they are going to summarize text , create original images. it's called apple intelligence. did you like that? lisa: people were saying -- it didn't add much that was new. sort of a personal assistant touch with cross of messages and apps. i thought that it was interesting, samsung posted this on the twitter site yesterday, coming out snarky, adding apple doesn't make it groundbreaking. a little bit of snark. we've been here for quite a while. that said, wait until it comes out. the feature where you can share payments, that was pretty cool. did you see that? it was basically if you wanted to pay a friend $20, you just had to put the phone near it and the light goes through -- through. jonathan: shoot $20 over? that's not new, is it? lisa: no, it's packaging, it's what apple does best.

lisa: that is next.alking about the shift under the hood of the index level how outperformance has come from big tech when you look at the equal weight index. you can see those declines. we want to dig into that. under surveillance this morning, taking a risk outside of big tech. >> i really think you need to get a cut figured out, because essentially small caps tend to outperform after the cuts happen, so any disappointment on the cut narrative will push the stocks back down. the other thing that you really need for small caps to work is an above-average economy. i don't like the situation with the fed and i don't like that the economic story seems it is slowing right now. lisa: investors looking for opportunities in small caps. jill from bank of america securities writing, we have been tactically cautious and selective in the russell 2000 index since april, but sustained outperformance may depend on further disinflation. makeup america -- bank of america still expects a december fed cut. i want to talk

lisa: u.s.ing losses for the year as investors await upcoming s&p global pmi data. leslie falconio of ubs writing, we expect two non-recessionary hikes in 2024 starting in september with economic growth and inflation slowing. we think inflation -- investors should invest cash and money into market holdings and high-quality corporate and government bonds. do you go into pounds as a bearish bet when we have weakening data or is this still the goldilocks soft landing on a rate cut adjustments? leslie: i think it is a bit of both. if you look at what the yield curve has done since may, we have bull flattened. strong payrolls report. the market was pricing in two cups before the fed meeting, two after the meeting. the only thing that changed was the terminal rate coming down. the market is expecting this slower growth outlook. that doesn't mean that you'll have a hard landing. we think interest rates will come down toward the end of the year as we have a drop in inflation, growth stays above trend. t

lisa: i think j.p.eased emphasis over even cpi that we get next wednesday head of the rate decision. what morgan stanley's ellen zentner said is important to highlight. our understanding of what the numbers mean. she said 250,000 is what you need to keep growing at the current level, keep unemployment at the current level. that brings out some of the numbers differently than looking at historical precedents. jonathan: what is weak? when they say that we are weakening but not weak, what is weak? citi's stuart keiser says anything below 150. bank of america was something like 125. that will be a potential conversation and 28 minutes. lisa: some say that this isn't that important, but revisions matter because they have been messy and we have seen downward revisions. we saw the weakest growth in six months last month, so it has been pretty punchy. if we get that revised significantly lower could that shift the needle? that is a legitimate question. jonathan: it doesn't matter what the number is, at 8:31 tho

lisa: it sounds good.a whistleblower claiming hundreds of parts were mishandled and may have been installed on new 737 max planes. it is yet another hurdle for dave calhoun as he prepares -- prepares to testify before a senate panel later today. joining us now is benedikt kammel. i want to start with the commentary we heard from dave calhoun himself about the importance of transparency. about not hiding anything. why is it, even that ethic, that week after week there are new disclosures coming up -- out about this company? benedikt: it is probably because of the unique situation boeing has been in since that january fit accident we have written so much about. the more you dig and the more you are under the microscope the more people will find out. this is precisely what is happening. we have had a slew of whistleblowers come forth. the latest one he just referenced, saying they mishandled parts, that they were sloppy, and this is only the latest one of several of these allegations. the timing obviously is

lisa: i am curious.etails into the macro economic cycle. i wonder at what point some of the cleaner energies to the increased energy needs of machine computing etc. -- doesn't benefit as much as others. for the foreseeable future because of some of these push pool dynamics? >> if you look at five-year oil, it has been anchored at $70 per barrel. this is the important thing. there is this dynamic going on. they would like to have a higher price. there is not too much supply coming through. that is the prices, enabling them to fund themselves in the markets. the other operators in opec -- and thinking of a few trying to raise cash. by the way, it works for the u.s. as well. they are trying to push prices lower to contain inflation. just allowing this wave in oil. the price comes down. that has been a successful move to contain inflation. they had to stick to this up and up cycle. we have reverted and now we are in a happy medium. right where we are. i can make pieces on both ends. still a very tense enviro

lisa: some. most. first of all, he's highlighting how confused and split apart the fed reserve committee really is. to your point, some people did revise it. most, they did not. as to the motivation, it was not clear. it highlighted the breakdown of the vote. going over it again it highlights how bifurcated the fomc really is. four officials seeing no rate cuts this year according to hawkish projections. it's up from two officials in the march productions. one cut leaving us in that category. but it is not as if this is a federal reserve committee that won't go it all if they see serious weakening. what does it leave you with? confusion and the lights -- likes of michael's saying i will dictate where yields will go. jonathan: it's really funny making it simple, richard clarida was on with the team earlier on bloomberg tv saying that the fed was hawkish on the day and it was a dovish day for markets in that's the take away. we closed at all-time highs yesterday. lisa: going off of cpi you saw inflation

lisa: u.s.unclear what they can do ahead of it other than not provide guidance. i wonder though as an fx trader if long euro is the new hot trade given that economic data is coming in stronger and the ecb is going to launch a rate cutting cycle that the fed seems far away from. sonja: i'm going to say that i was never a big fan of the parity discussion we had not long ago. you are perfectly right in saying that we have seen some positive news out of the euro zone and if you look at the recent indicators, the numbers have been better than expected. we have seen some relief, especially with spain and portugal. very strong data there. it's moving in the right direction, supportive of the euro despite the ecb cutting rates before the fed. having said that, it's a very anemic recovery. it's not a very dynamic recovery for export. it's not a strong recovery, i don't think it is enough to justify a bullish take on the euro. i don't think that we should give up on the u.s. dollar, either, despite the fa

lisa: thank you so much.lad you mentioned the fed speak that we heard last week because frankly it was all over the place. it wasn't exactly one commentary. it was basically some people saying i want to be hawkish, others saying i would have cut rates. ann-marie but they do continue to have this refrain. we can be patient, we need to wait for 2%. but then we make this mistake before? we can just pay attention to the data and not the fed speak, isn't that the mistake we made the start of the year would be set they are going to cut six times and then know they are not, we have to pay attention to that. are we doing it again but to a lesser degree? ann-marie kashkari was asked specifically about that report that that the that will only cut rates once this year. i think that is a reasonable prediction and it looks like december. lisa: and that's what a lot of people are coalescing around. let's get you an update on stories elsewhere. here is your bloomberg brief. yahaira: oil edging higher after mixed economic da

lisa: he's not alone.e and more frequently. everyone is talking about core pce and i want to know if income is going to outstrip spending or if we see those personal deficits of individuals getting deeper. annmarie i know you don't want to talk about the politics, but the policy is still important. biden went after them and said it will be inflationary. that is what these economists said. if you get pce to the slowest level we have seen in months, slowest level this year, that would be a huge win for the economy. the concern is what's on the horizon. jonathan: the focus on inflation is feeling stale. ultimately for me that is where things could stand at the moment . if you look at jobless claims yesterday, the initial claims dropped six k, making it the highest claims print for a non-fund payroll survey week since june of 2023. are we going to plateau at these elevated levels? will we break down again? or are we going to incrementally be breaking out? that is a concern from a lot of people. lisa: a lot of

lisa: like nvidia?
