lisa fletcher with the refugees who want to return >>> thanks for being with us, i'm joie chen. it's a tough call. those moved by the plight of refugees who flooded into europe. many wonder how much the u.s. should do to help. the latest poll taken out of the picture of the toddler washed up. shows most think president obama's promise to give refuge to 10,000 is too great. there is sympathy. what do those that have made it here find. lisa fletcher found a family with a surprising answer. >> reporter: a father-son scrimmage on the east side of chicago. but on this sunday, there's a new player trying to sharpen his skills. 12-year-old sagaria, who -- zacharia who arrived in the u.s. in december, his mother and five siblings, all refugees from syria. zacharia has a powerful message for those at home, one that may shock americans. the youngest of the children are a 4-year-old and 8-year-old - two inseparable sisters - their father murdered by a sniper whilst walking home from work in 2011. he remembers that day. >> reporter: the family lives in this 2-bedroom apartment in chicago. t

"america tonight"s lisa fletcher has his story. >> reporter: around the corner from the most famous resident charles wakes up before sunrise. to the sounds commute. >> the people on their way to work, when they come into the subway, they don't want to look in my direction. they drop their head, turn their head. you know, like passing or hurry down the stairs if i'm on the escalator. >> he is one of nearly 8,000 homeless people living in the nation's capital. he spends most nights outside this downtown metro station. >> i sleep two blocks from the white house. clue. >> but unlike many in his situation, he has a job. at one of the last places you might expect. >> i work in an office building in the u.s. city. the nation's lawmakers. and i'm out there in the street, panhandling, asking for nickels and dimes. >> the day starts before down. >> when a metro worker tells gladden and his neighbours to move out for the day. >> i'll wake up and take in my little area, trying to keep it clean so the guy will not stop us from cleaning there. >> i eat a sandwich and a cup of coffee, and i go to work, and

. >> i'm lisa fletcher and this is talk to al jazeera. my guest this week is the architect designing the national museum of african american history and culture, david adjaye. >> most architects spend years, and years pursuing a degree. you have one year of formal architectural training. what do you think... >> you did your research. busted! >> well, it's very interesting, though. what gave you the courage to just carve your own path like that? >> when i started, i was extremely scared about the whole thing. but i was also incredibly inspired by this thing. when i did my research into how architecture was being taught at that time, and what the big voices were, i found that i just disagreed. and i didn't have empathy with the discussion. because i felt that the discussion had become very formal. had become about architects naval-gazing, in a way. and kinda debating the style of something, versus the style of something else. i wanted to find a path that engaged more with what the world was, and what people were doing. so, i found that i ha
