dug for weeks. traveling there is not going to be advised. the rain yesterday in southern california. back home, we have partly cloudy skies and a look at the golden gate bridge, where things are moving slowly. 43 in the city as well as morgan hill. upper 30's in santa rosa. it is a chillier start. we have sun to enjoy. we will let you know how long the dry conditions last in a few minutes. kumasi: right now, that record-breaking snow is making for major problems in the sierra. the main highways have reopened. it is still a treacherous journey to get back to the bay area. if you don't have traction control, you are not going to get far in pollock pines. these visitors parked at a gas station and have been digging out for three days. >> we definitely got buried. it was a big winter storm. we did not expect it. kumasi: my goodness. local officials are urging everyone to stay away from the sierra unless it is central to your travel. road crews and emergency responders have been working around-the-clock to clear the roadways and to restore power, but locals are finding it hard to get gas to fuel their generators. >> we are out of gas. we drove three miles out yesterday, to the other gas station, and they were shut down. kumasi: tens of thousands of people are still without heat, and cannot cook as snow piles up. the biggest challenge for pgn the biggest challenge for need to know. amy: there is a lot of frustration with this one, especially in the community. gyms must require that everyone wear masks. this comes just as gyms were hoping for a boost and people wanting to join because of those new year's resolutions to get fit. this is going to be quite a blow for them. it starts today. everyone has to wear masks. some counties had a mask requirement removed, but with rising cases, it is back in place. a quarter of gym members do not like to work out while wearing masks. while officials understand the frustration, they feel we must do this to try to flatten the curve again. >> as was experienced in other cases, the omicron surge had a total quickly. we would be equally responsive in terms of removing any variance in restri in re policies. amy: offices in some counties have been allowed to go mask free if they are all vaccinated, but people will have to put masks back on. health officials say the masks are a critical layer as they weather the winter storm. this does apply to everyone, even the vaccinated. reporting live, amy hollyfield. jobina: while omicron is rising fast in the bay area, there are reasons to remain hopeful. the top ucf dr. said there are positive trends peeking out. he says we could both be in good, maybe even great shape in six to eight weeks, by early february. it could be more like the flu, with the majority of the u.s. protected by vaccines or antibodies. he said vaccines are preventing hospitalizations, and key treatments like oral antiviral pills are a great help. kumasi: many of us will have to embrace a new way of ringing and the new year in the midst of this covert case surge. the people we spoke with in the bay area are passing on parties, large get-togethers, and big celebrations. county officials are recommending keeping gatherings of small and short. they also suggest wearing well fitted or surgical masks. they believe in testing before the event. >> we have seen case rates spike after every holiday in the last two years. this variant, we have not seen this type of transmission. kumasi: officials say holiday gatherings account for 40% of new covid cases with a noon -- known source of infection. jobina: new year's eve performances canceled at their san francisco through the end of the year. a breakthrough covid case was detected among the theater group. san francisco canceled its new year's eve fireworks show because of a surge in cases. kumasi: starting february 1, san francisco will require people to show proof of roosters to attend indoor mega-events which are a thousand people or more. zuni cafe in hayes in hayes in a started its mandate yesterday. this will apply to people who are eligible to get a booster. everyone else has to show proof of original vaccination. the restaurant chef says he is not worried about losing business. >> i'm afraid covid-19 will take business away from us. this is what customers expect us to do. >> it seems like a good lisa argen. a busy morning. lisa: and widespread rain is returning to the bay area with a moderate atmospheric river tomorrow. today is your dry day where we look at current temperatures all in the blue here. freezing in napa. 33 in san ramon and livermore as well as santa rosa. 39 in fremont. ready for in gilroy. -- 34 in gilroy. we are looking at temperatures anywhere from two to 11 degrees colder. one of the frosty mornings yet. by 9:00, we are still in the 40's. we have clouds increasing throughout the day. by 11:00, 40's to near 50. the sun fades away and we will be looking at numbers only in the mid-50's for most of us. the corner of your screen, you can see some of that green. rain will be moving in so today is your day to get out and do some cleanup. we will be adding it in inches s across your neighborhood. liz: more than half a fully vaccinated people 65 years and older have received a booster and about 2 million total shots are being administered each day. covid-19 cases continue to go up across the country. here is karina mitchell with the latest. karina: the number of new cases in new york city because double and infections may rapidly rise across the country according to a concerning new forecast from the policy lab at children's hospital of philadelphia. although experts are keeping a close eye on the omicron variant, they say the delta variant is largely to blame for the rise in cases. >> we are seeing high numbers of cases in emergency rooms and hospitals. those cases are continuing to go up in the last several weeks. karina: hospitals in connecticut overwhelmed. >> on a daily basis, we are challenged. our emergency departments are very busy. our floors are very busy. karina: alex kenner of northern california is in the hospital battling covid-19 complications. >> he is still sedated. he has been sedated for a long time. i am grateful for that because he cannot feel pain right now. karina: new research shows people under 18 are playing a key role in the rising infection rate. the cdc says more than 50 million americans have gotten their boosters. health officials are pointing to boosters as a way to protect against the omicron variant. >> although we do not have all the answers on the omicron variant, initial data suggests that covid-19 boosters help to bolster protection against omicron. karina: the pentagon is considering making the booster mandatory for service members. karina mitchell, abc news, new york. liz: as covid cases spike across the country, health experts warn new data shows young children and teenagers are the ones contributing most to the jump in transmission. that is a concerning trend as kids under five are not yet vaccinated and remain unprotected. stephanie sierra, a member of our vaccine team, has a look at the numbers. stephanie: since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 7 million children have tested positive for covid-19. both age groups not seen as super-spreaders, but data shows that is changing. >> the data is getting intong io pediatric populations and we are seeing it. stephanie: children under 18 represent the largest per capita increase in cases. dr. george rutherford says that is due to pediatric cases already being low before our latest delta surge. >> it is being diagnosed in greater numbers in children and part of that is we have extensive screening programs in schools that are picking up asymptomatic cases. stephanie: across the country, more than 1500 children are currently hospitalized with covid. it is a 37% increase over the past week. rutherford explains that is due to delta as the risks omicron poses are still unknown. would you recommend families change holiday plans given what we are learning? >> these are relative things. if they are a 17-year-old who hangs around all his friends unvaccinated, then there is some risk to that. stephanie: stanford physician dr. selena's says getting fully vaccinated over the holidays will be key to minimizing any future surge. >> i am somewhat optimistic about the fact that a winter surge may be different this time. stephanie: different given the level of immunity already present in the community, but what about those under five, not yet eligible, or unprotected? lisa, this christmas without snow. lisa: yeah, we are going from 19% of average from the sierra nevada before we had that rain, 1090% statewide average, so we needed it. there is more to come with fluctuation in the snow level next week, but we are watching the storm track with a focus to the north, and for the bay area, dry. we are looking at the fog in the east and north bays. temperatures close to freezing. looking at visibility from east end north bay from a mile half-mile from concord to santa rosa and fairfield. the rest of the bay area doing fine but colder, about six degrees in inland valleys. 42 san francisco, 37 oakland, 30 six san jose, 35 morgan hill, 40 three half moon bay, santa cruz 36. as we look at the sutro, we have fog. 36 novato, also looking at low 30's for livermore, upper 30's by the delta and concord. bundle up and stay inside and under the covers if you can. as we look at santa cruz, pretty day on the way, but chilly, 50's and starting out in the 30's. cold mornings with frost and fog today and tomorrow and mainly sunny with high clouds and a few more on sunday. it morning drizzle, and looking at rainy days next week. heavy rain at times. as we look at the rest of the day, 3:00 with a few high clouds, mainly sunny, and then we will increase some clouds for sunday. this is noontime. the rain stays offshore into monday. this is monday morning. you can see the precipitation but it is the front we are waiting for, and late monday at 4:00, the evening commute looks drive it overnight we should get wet. as we get to tuesday, it is going to start, a weather pattern that will be with us through the weekend, wet and active. as we look at christmas eve, we are at 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches of rain in this forecast model, but this is more conservative. we are looking at the coastal hills, santa cruz mountains, upwards of five inches of rain. it will be a cutoff low that interacts with an atmospheric river that allows for fluctuating snow levels. we are looking at several feet of snow but it could be a rain-snow mix at times.check back with us as things change the next few days. 52 in oakland, 49 in napa, concord at 47, 53 in san jose, and the accuweather 7 day forecast waking up to a little fog tomorrow. another cold start, perhaps drizzle late in the day, and as we look at monday night, cloudy with a chance of showersin the north bay and level two could be with us as we start winter on tuesday through the afternoon. right now we have level 1's on wednesday, thursday and friday. it is looking like a lot of rain for christmas eve. that could be a level two. we will track those snow totals at once again are looking at 4 to six feet next week. liz: people have been waiting for that and happy to see it. a historic east bay movie theater is one step closer to reopening. they have worked to save lafayette spark theater for years and they finally purchase the movie house and plans to reopen it in 2023. ramping up efforts to pay for a $5 million renovation. it opened in 1941 and shut down in 2005. it was one of the last remaining single screen theaters in the state. the newest "matrix" film " resurrections" is premiering in san francisco tonight, but not everyone is excited about the red carpet event. store owners tell abc 7 reporter cornell barnard that street closures around the event have been killing their business. >> i have had dreams that were not just dreams. cornell: fans have waited a long time for this, the newest installment of "the matrix." lisa argen. good morning, lisa. good morning, julian. everyone flowers, but they are going to be more scattered in the morning hours before they increasing coverage again later on this afternoon into monday. so it is a level one system right now. you can see the flow from the northwest to the southeast even a little bit of snow up here around clear lake as the air is certainly cold in the north bay novato to marinwood down through mill valley a few scattered light showers. you can see the pink there that indicates the freezing precipitation, san ramon 680 little wet there as we get down towards hayward and 580 and the hills over to the east yes, that is know we've had snow in mount hamilton a band of rain moving across the bay right now. so the peninsula just scattered light showers and down around los gatos through morgan hill. it's been certainly damp but nothing too organized right now. look at the current numbers. we're in the mid 30s in santa rosa 39, san ramon 42, san mateo. this is much colder than yesterday four to 15 degrees colder and throughout the day today. we're going to see some scattered showers, but by the afternoon into the evening hours more focused band of coming in from the north that means even colder air. so we're talking the likelihood of a rain snow mix and parts of the bay area into monday the coldest day the week tuesday and a look at the end of the year coming up in a few minutes, julian. all right. thank you lisa and check this out right here snow in the bay area. this is just south of livermore people in the area. saw some measurable snow. it's now covering san antonio valley road making driving treacherous there. this is an elevation of about 3,000 feet. and on the peninsula abc 7 found people preparing for possible flooding all of it happening near burlingame where plenty of sandbags were there for residents to load up with previous storms making a mess of things at the storage unit this man we talked to was not able to take any chances. he's trying to get ahead of the game and started raining pretty heavily this morning and i went down there wasn't any water on the driveway yet, but i'm sort of preemptively getting some bags in there. just in case for later. just in case the tree did come down as well in san bruno. it blocked crystal springs road between donna avenue and cunningham way crews quickly chopped that tree up got it out of there also on the peninsula flooding on millbrae street
