in alaska, republican senator lisa murkowski's career is still up in the air. in arizona, gop senator john mccain spent $20 million to save his. and in florida, which always manages to have the most interesting elections, hospital executive rick scott spent $39 million and won the gop's gubernatorial nod while democratic congressman kendrick meek was able to beat back another outsider's $50 million to win his party's senate nomination. but november brings a brand-new fight. what do we make of all of this? let's start, karen, with alaska. >> well, alaska was a big surprise, probably the biggest surprise of this election year so far and no one was more surprised than lisa murkowski, the senior senator from alaska, who thought -- and everyone else thought -- that she was going to cruise to a pretty easy primary win. she had a 20-1 money advantage over her opponent. she had a last name as the daughter of a former governor and senator that has been a fixture ant alaska ballot for 30 years, and then this almost unknown attorney, joe miller, came up tea party favorite

she may be on the ropes but alaska senator lisa murkowski is not quite ready to throw in the towel. >t ain't over until it's over. >> reporter: with over 99% of the votes counted, joe miller, tea party candidate and political unknown, leads murkowski by around 1,500 votes. 7,000 absentee ballots still need to be counted. but alaska republicans acknowledge it will be difficult for murkowski to take the lead. murkowski is a member of one of the most powerful political families in alaska. her father was a former senator and governor. she's part of the republican senate leadership and she outraised miller 10-1. so how is murkowski so close to ending up as the biggest upset of this election year? perhaps it was palin power. miller was backed by the former alaska governor. >> he's got the backbone to confront obama's radical agenda. by contrast, lisa murkowski has voted with the democrats more than any republican up for re-election this year. >> reporter: republican insiders say it's more than just palin's endorsement. they put the blame on murkowski for critical strategic errors, including
