lisa murkowski, susan collins. either get the job done you promised the american people, advance the president's agenda. what are the conservative values that the president is advocating for that you're unwilling to support? >> daniel dale, does the white house think that's the way to preserve a governing coalition in the senate? >> if they do, i think they're delusional. like i think there is this hannity white house bannonite belief that there are these magical trumpite people out there somewhere who would get very unpopular trump ideas through the house and senate. i don't think it's true. i think the problem is the agenda. trump keeps saying we were one vote away on health care, you know. we needed one better senator, we could get it through. but we know there was a whole additional caucus that was keeping quiet about their health care plan, not saying anything because they didn't want to commit either. so i think they're much farther away than they think they are. and if they think mitch mcconnell is the probl

over to the senate, what happened with the health care bill with senators mccain and rand paul, lisa murkowski and susan collins, there's something about the senators who just don't feel like they can -- they want to win, that they have to express themselves more for reasons of their own egos than actually getting a bill done. now you've got senator marco rubio and mike lee already proposing to double the child tax credit which could really through a spanner in the bill, it completely disrupts the calculations they've made to make the bill work out all right. i would say that's just the beginning in the senate and it's going to be a real test for the republicans to see if they can get the senators to pass tax legislation. >> what's wrong with this child tax credit proposal? >> well, we don't know much about it yet, the current tax credit is a thousand dollars and it is refundable and -- paul: which means? >> basically if you have no tax liability you get a check. that's what it will be whenever we are done with this political commerce, more spending through the tax code. paul: also very expens

point president trump attacked somewhere from six to eight republican senators personally after lisa murkowski, rand paul, bob corker, jeff flake, mitch mcconnell, ted cruz, marco rubio. half the senate has been on trump's hit list. i think that there is more policy unity than there's unity about president trump. again, all he needs is for three republicans to peel off and he loses the majority for anything. >> dana: you wrote a column, does character still matter? you wrote this in national review. what was your conclusion? >> basically what i was saying is that character certainly matters in high office but not for the reasons people think it does. for the american people to have unity, we have to have trust in one another that we have certain basic principles. character is about holding those principles sacrisanct even though when you are going to take a hit. i contrasted that with president trump going after a gold star family member this week. it's really not about the political back and forth as much as it is about the fact that if we don't have any in common, if there's no sacred space
