lisa. >>> a mystery this spring, a certain plant is growing like crazy. the concern is on what is growing but where it's growing and why. here is abc 7 news reporter wayne> reporter: at spring lake in sonoma county, there is a not so subtle contrast between the wildlife and along the shoreline, life running wild. >> muck. >> reporter: more like a mirky muck that appeared in the last few weeks. >> this is very unusual. >> it's definitely noticeable and it's spread. >> reporter: you're looking at a native plant, according to melanie parker from the sonoma county regional parks, it's having a banner year. >> we have it in almost every pond or lake in sonoma county at some level. >> to this degree? >> not to this degree. >> reporter: it appears almost every spring but never in this quantity. the difference this year, the water appears to have more nutrients and the source? is one theory, fire retardant, last fall planes blanketed this region with the orange stuff that contains fertilizer, as much as 10% in some cases. some of that may have worked its way into the run off. >> it's possible, i'm not going to rule it out. >> reporter: though there may be other
