you can keep rising at that rate. lisa the beige book in philadelphia as well as taylor swift. michael mckee, thank you. joining us is someone who always has incredible insights, willow catching up with her at jackson hole. the chief economist at adp with a real insight into just how much ammunition firepower a lot of consumers have. throughout the morning, jonathan and i were talking about this income increase we are seeing across the board. i'm wondering, how much is that going to fuel the next wave of consumer spending in a way that maybe is not being fully appreciated? >> good morning, good to see you. real wages going up is a great thing for workers. but it is important to provide context. the thing about inflation, i know this sounds very obvious, is that prices generally go up, but when it comes to core inflation, they don't come back down. we are still looking at the higher prices from the consumer perspective. and where you have seen the wage growth is predominantly low-paid jobs. so that is about $5,000 over the

tom: lisa, jump in here if you will. dent. lisa: we will get there in a second, julia. to build on what you are talking about, productivity filling the gaps at a time when we are learning to live with this new rate structure, do you believe the long and variable lags or have we already adjusted? julia: there are two channels -- the capital markets channel and the argument that through forward guidance the lags they are are shorter than they were. that resonates. we see the fed engaging in a lot of -- then we have the credit channel, that moves a lot slower. something like commercial real estate has yet to reprice and reset to a world of higher interest rates. the credit channel just takes longer. there is more fixed-rate financing. the full impact of monetary policy still has long and variable lags. those are difficult to calibrate in real time, and that is what leaves the fed data dependent. lisa: we are looking at a situation where we could be entering a quiet period, because we won't get data if the government shuts do

lisa: you think they would believe you?to it or are you not going to sell? in the u.k., that anecdote does not exist. you will see an effective rate in the u.k., much more higher and quickly then in the united states at the moment. lisa: how much does that fortify wage price spiral if people are realizing they cannot lift with the same salaries at the same levels? it keeps going up and it is this whole spiral. tom: governor bailey has a short and fixed. jonathan: he has stared down the barrel of eight presence -- 8% wage growth. what is intriguing about the boe decision thursday is, i see a lot of people expecting a rate hike. i look at recent communication from the bank of england, they are not screaming rate hike. there is a divide between communication i am hearing and what economists in london are expecting thursday. tom: i was having my hot brown water this morning. my phone rings. it is kathleen. kathleen says, my daughter is going to be on with you today. make sure you pronounce her name right. matta aligned. --madel

what do you do with that? lisar answer and you can hear that from some of their discussions where they want to get inflation down. stagflation is not going to be their base case they are going to be happy with. at the same time, they are between a rock and a hard place. if i knew the answer to that, i would be in a very different position. jonathan: you have spoken to president lagarde recently. tom: this came up yesterday. you nailed it. her speech that she gave is not implementable given these markets. you are right back to massive short-term data dependency with she and philip pushing against. you cannot have a 60,000 foot plan when you have stochastic moves out there. jonathan: going to some of the credit data. it is not good. lisa: it is worse than what we have seen even during the euro crisis. what do they do with that? is this being worked through and we still have higher prices sibley because of crude and natural gas are going up? jonathan: i feel bad for steve, cutting him off. lisa: you were great. jonath

tom: did you hear the d1 resurgence story? lisave a lot of respect for mr. grantham how did you address the three year, four year hush this is had on the financial american experiment. >> jeremy grantham is a financial analyst that has been prescient in predicting bubbles bursting he is good at that and he has predicted many bubbles as a result he has a terrific record us and investor but now he spends most of his time investing in climate change, climate tag. the greatest challenge is the climate problem. most of his money is in a foundation that goes toward side. he likes to call bubbles and says artificial intelligence is a mini bubble. were coming out of a tech bubble . he is a british citizen but lived in the united states after harvard and built money management firms and is well known for his philanthropy and for predicting bubbles. he also said the fed is almost always wrong in predicting recessions. he says we will have one for sure. lisa: does he think it's hard to see a bubble now than in the past? is it more difficult t

you think it would be better if everyone stopped talking? lisa: no i'm not talking about you. about all of the fed leaders. lisa: whether it is a good place or not, there is some value to waiting and that is a marred message -- hard message. we want to price and what is going to happen but there is no answer. they want to get enough collection data and massaging a certain way because the data is confusing right now. tom: john williams, he nailed it without comment. he brings out the cocktails from a key consultant in williams last night. john said we were in a good place. jonathan: let's talk about the labor market. we use the word like rebalancing the labor market, a weekend labor market thus the objective here. you have a big union, gm, ford, still lantus, they are a .3 right now. you have this ongoing debate where 16% pay raise is not enough. i am trying to figure out if these debates, these conversations between unions are the dying gasp of the hot labor market or another story of the sticky labor market. lisa: that's a frustration in getting some characterization. there is

that is what you saw yesterday. lisa the bull case and bear case. a real acceleration would be the bull case. do you agree or think there is a perverse reality where things re-accelerate that could be the most negative outcome for equities? stuart: my view would be good data still good. they call it bad data because it is bad and good data because it is good. this is a nominal growth asset. if you are rooting for growth to slow down, you're probably rooting for the wrong thing but a soft landing, real acceleration in growth i think is the positive side of this. the strength of the economy i relative basis has been the labor market and it spend, so if it started to weekend, that is where you want to be careful. if you see payrolls come off, you want to be cautious and let that happen. this is a growth asset. we are not rooting for bad news at this point. jonathan: the team did a segment about good news, bad news. it was interesting this year. we have had a year of upside surprises in the u.s. economy. we touched on this.
