listeria is quite unusual as a bacteria for a couple of reasons. is that once you eat it, it may be one to three weeks or even one or two months before you become ill, and that's the main reason we expect to see unfortunately case numbers rising in the coming weeks. and the second is that it's one of those rare bacteria that can actually grow even when it's fridgerated. so as you put it in your refrigerator, most food, even if it's contaminated, you'll knock down that contamination, but with listeria, the bacteria can continue to grow in your refrigerator, and that's why we tell people to throw out anything from jensen farms, any cantaloupe from jensen farms. >> ifill: the source of the bacteria, this farm, was it farm equipment, farm animal, the soil itself? do we know? >> we don't know yet. what we do know is that we're getting better at detecting this type of outbreak. colorado is one of ten states that the centers for disease control and prevention supports to track food-borne illnesses in real-time. and the state of colorado did a terrific job

let's take a closer look at this listeria outbreak.o walk over and break it down for you here. if you take a peek at it, we now have this report, 18 states have been affected, 72 illnesses, 13 deaths. these are the states where the deaths have occurred, the darker orange states. 18 states in all against 72 illnesses, the latest count. those numbers will go up. why does this happen? here is one of the reasons. this listeria, it can stay in still pools of water. you see that in a lot of agricultural settings like that. also, gets into the soil, very persistent, hard to get out. this is significant, if it gets inside an animal and the intestines, it is such a survivable disease it can hang forever and live for a long time in animal interstate intestines. one reason listeria is so tough, it can survive both in extremely hot or extremely cold temperatures. that's why it is tough and dangerous. in the case of the cantaloupes, this is what makes it especially dangerous. like many fruit, you have a porous skin. there's concern if it's in the s

we're not talking hift e ining we're talking listeria. what is it?'s a bacteria that gets on the surface of foods and can get inside foods and it can grow in your refrigerator and if you're a high-risk person if you are pregnant or elderly and immune compromised, you're a serious risk of major health consequences if you get exposed to it. >> what are symptoms? how would you know that you actually have been exposed to this bacteria? >> let's divide that into two parts. first, the two high risk groups are pregnant women and elderly immune compromised. if you are pregnant, you could have little symptom. flu-type feelings. minor fever. don't feel right. it doesn't do much to impact the mom but it can be devastating to the baby particularly if you are in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. there are symptoms that are minor. if you had exposure and you have a bit of flu-like illness, get yourself to the doctor. if you are elderly or immune compromised, the systems are more profound. fever, feeling really unwell. it can infect the brain so you get h
