what you're looking at is the scene of the iconic little rock 9 in 1957.guard was there because ann agree mob was also there, meaning the group of students outside as the black students attempted to integrate central high school in little rock, arkansas. these were heroes of the civil rights era but now there's in evidence showing that there is a growing number of segregated schools in the united states today and it's not just among blacks and whites but also hispanics, asians and even poorer students isolated from their wealthier counterparts. it's today's buried lead. now the issue is coming to a head again in rural cleveland, mississippi. that's where the school district may fight a federal court order to desegregate its schools separated by old train tracks. the case in mississippi is just one of all too many. >> reporter: the legal fight lingering over the schools in this tiny mississippi town is almost as old as these buildings. a federal court ruled cleveland, mississippi, schools are still segregated 62 years after the landmark ruling brown versus

guest: in little rock, it is significant for many reasons.at president eisenhower had the courage to intervene when it was clear that the local authorities and governor of arkansas would not allow the nine children, students to integrate central high school. it is also significant that the city of little rock and the state of arkansas had embraced the story and commemorated it, and that was a big part of the public memory of that community. the national park center has a visitor center and historic site, and it is the only school in america that is also part of the national park, and the students at the school have served as curators of the story, so it is significant on many levels. the salk institute is one of the most beautiful landmarks in the country. it helps understand the accomplishment of jonas salk and the invention of the polio vaccine, and his collaboration with the great 20th-century architect to create this institute and this landmark in la jolla, california. host: we should point out this commemorates the national park service
