littleton, colorado, and columbine more to the point, where we had the mass shooting. colorado is no stranger to shooting incidents. those at aurora, the movie theater shooting, and of course, columbine. many look at this and say, well, it's unique to colorado. of course it is not. we mentioned connecticut, we mentioned last year there were 27 different school shootings of different magnitude and fatilities. an all too frequent event here. new york city policeman is here. there are procedures in place, and if the kids themselves are the first to know them. >> absolutely. but as sad as it is, neil, i believe what we see today is a textbook application of a pro-active, active shooter policy and as rod correctly point out, you can't discount the possibility that there could be an explosive device or co-conspirators in the area or in the school itself. so the police department did a terrific job from the fact we know by identifying, isolating and containing. and those are key elements on item wes have discussed in the past on several occasions in the wake of the massacre i

colorado, it's about 30 minutes from denver. >> so wait a minute. my understanding is that this about a 15 minute drive from littleton, and that everything, we're talking about aurora colorado where so many people lost their lives in that theater shooting, in littleton and centennial, they're all suburbs of denver. >> right, this high school is one of the largest, one of the very largest high schools in the suburbs. >> mia, appreciatmaria, thank y. when we hear of one school shooting, we can't help but be reminded of others. it was a year ago at newtown, connecticut. in a moment we'll take you to georgia where there have been a law on the books since 1982 requiring every house to have a gun. the city says it has helped keep crime down. the first to san francisco where you see on the other side of the spectrum, gun owners there face some of the most restrictive laws in the country. melissa chan is there for us. melissa, what laws have been passed in california? >> 18 bills were put forward in the california state legislatu legislature, and it gives a sense of the momentum of the pro gun control here. to give you an example of the kinds of laws we're see

littleton back in 1999. there was the flat canyon high school shooting also in colorado, bailey, colorado, in 2006. so the local law enforcement and state law enforcement have trained very, very diligently since those two incidents to make sure that they are able to respond to a situation like this, and so they immediately put all the students on sort of a lockdown procedure, made sure they were safe inside the classrooms, and they quickly went in and worked to clear the school. that's when they found the suspect believed to be the shooter in this case, and believed to be the only suspect at this time, and he was already deceased. we do not have the identities yet of either the suspect or the students who were injured in this case. at this point they're working it sounds like to notify family members first so we'll work to get that information here shortly, hopefully. we have confirmed all the students involved, including the suspect and the two who were injured, are students at arapahoe high school. arapahoe high school is in littleton. it is part of the littleton public school district as opposed
