the notion of a gracious, welcoming edge to that site is one that will make the city more livable for everybody. the plan provides a nice array of housing types to support to the first population of current and future residents, including young professionals, families, seniors, and students. it could be a bit more family and student-friendly. perhaps by adding 3-bedroom units and we would like to see that be a cool student housing project. i am working on a mirror on that. their art to other colleges -- three other colleges in the neighborhood. it is important to keep making progress on housing. the downtown plan monitoring report that was highlighted in the column on tuesday shows how hard it is to create new housing in the city when you are trying to -- new projects of 10 units or more. even with the inclusion of mission bay, a 900 of these new units have been added over the past 25 years. i commend the commission on its leadership in creating a vision for housing over the long term with the recent approvals of parkmerced and treasure island projects as well as the innovative thinki

world class infrastructure, livable condition. better market street is also making strides. they have completed the existing conditions analysis with probably the most comprehensive examination ever of transit operations on market street. we had over 30 volunteers riding muni for a total of over 20 hours to try to document transportation issues on market and mission streets, both functioning as for the course for transit. -- corridors for transit. we met with the citizens advisory committee on monday night. we will be generating the next set of guidance but symbols. on the van ness brt, we are preparing to launch a 30% design effort, and also for the annual submittal to the transportation administration on draft starts. that is expected to begin circulating to the public as a draft eir/eis in the early fall. we are looking forward to making sure that the detailed designs start on time. the authority and got a joint award, together with the san francisco mta, for the greatest national impact from the department of the environment, for its work on the climate action strategy.

keeping streets clean, businesses, supporting small businesses, maintaining and making sure the city is livable for everyone. no one really looked to their neighbors. they stayed within their neighborhood, but did not reach beyond the boundaries. that is one thing i saw that i actually made a concerted effort on the campaign to build bridges. for me, that goes beyond the neighborhood. it goes to connecting the southeast to the large part of san francisco, wake up, we're out here. we want bike paths, dog parks, open space. we no longer want to have a neighborhood or a reputation of a crime-filled community. the other thing that i learned is really, we are all human. how to connect with that spirit, whether you're living in public housing, owning your own property, your asian, african american, we are all one. we are a community. when we realize and move in the direction of being a human's and having this human experience, connecting together, really be each other's keeper, then san francisco begins to drive. i also learned through the endorsement process -- you go through this process to get end

speakers have mentioned the green by claims, improvements, park lit, thing that make our city more livable. so i want to thank the staff of the mta. i see a lot of you out there now. just to hear the support from the board of supervisors and know that the board of supervisors and mta is on the same page. the sustainable streets group, you are doing such great work, and i am proud to support it. the chairman of our board is here. he rode in with mayor lee. i rode in with supervisor wiener's group, from the castro. i want to mention the fact that there was a 58% increase in the city in the last four years. that is an impressive number, but even more when you put it in context. could we have handled a 58% increase for muni writers? 58% increase in car traffic during rush hour? no one would be going anywhere. this is a lesson to us. we have an ambitious goal. 20% of trips are bike trips by 2020. we can do it. if we have already increased 58 -- 58% in four years, we can do it. events like bike to work day are just proving the importance of biking to meet all our strategies and goals. thank you
