in and i'm liz cho. david and shirleen are off today. we begin this half hour, with a new tactic to fight drug crimes on long island. this morning. n.j. burkett is live in the outback, with details and how police hope residents can help. >> and that's right. the drug problem here has reached epidemic proportions. those are the words of the police commissioner this afternoon. who says he is determined to take on this program, head on, with a new approach. what they are doing is establishing a hotline number. specifically for residents to call to report suspected drug dealing in their neighborhoods, ken. the commissioner is convinced that if a breakthrough can be made, it's going to come from the streets, from the neighborhoods, where drug dealing and drug using is often taking place. now, in addition, they're restructuring how the department responds to drug tips and how they are being prioritized. they're also taking a hard look at cases where people died of drug overdoses. making efforts to track down the dealers in those cases. but the

i'm liz cho. >> i'm bill ritter. first, breaking news. a teenager shot now in critical condition. >> it happened outside of the jefferson houses complex in east harlem across from a school. >> carolina lee is live with more. >> reporter: bill and liz, we got an update about three minutes ago about the teen's condition, as you mentioned, in critical condition. the teen, according to police, as you can see, there is a very active police presence here in east harlem. this all happened around 5:00 this afternoon here at a new york city housing complex called the jefferson houses. this happened near a school, just across the street from 57. we do not have the circumstances surrounding this shooting, but it did happen here at third after near 115th street in east harlem. again, what led up to sha that shooting, we do not have that information just yet. again, a live look out at what's going on here. you can see dozens of police officers here at the scene and then across the street, there are people who are looking trying to figure out what happ

. >> i'm liz cho. no deal yet. we're about 30 hours before the hour glass runs out of sand. a deal might be close possibly sometime tonight. >> more than 100,000 new jersey transit passengers every day, but a strike could impact an entire region. tim fleischer has a contingency plan should there be a storm. >> we begin with the latest on the negotiations. he is in newark. >> reporter: cautiously optimistic, and i'm told both sides took solid, serious steps towards settlement. done, but it appears finally to be within reach. of course the fate of 100,000 commuters is in it tonight. companies big and small are making contingency plans for a strike threatened for sunday morning on the third largest commuter railroad in america. as we have reported, union negotiators arrived at the hotel all business not taking any questions from reporters. they met behind closed doors with railroad negotiators for about two hours. i'm told new jersey transit put a new offer on the table. that was intended to jump start the talks. the lead negotiator seemed determined to set the tone. >> new jer

i'm liz cho. bill is off tonight. that family is understandably shaken up. fortunately no one was hit. tonight police are searching for the gunman. shots were fired outside of an apartment building but one bullet hit a nearby house. eyewitness news reporter marcus solis is there with our lead story. >> two young children sleeping came crashing through, they were not hurt. meantime police are searching for two suspects who residents of the building saw get in to a getaway car that was parked right here and speed off. >> reporter: the path the bullet took is plain to see. a hole in the siding outside of the home. inside a hole in the sheet rock, and a few feet away the shattered glass of a liquor cabinet where it came to rest. unnerving to say the least for this homeowner who doesn't want to be identified. >> we was very scared. we just run around the house to see what happened but quite afraid to walk through the windows because you never know what is happening outside. >> reporter: turns out what was happening outside was several shots fired. it was responde

. >> i'm liz cho. >>> a not guilty plea today for the man charged in a hit-and-run accident who killed a 7-year-old little girl. >> sheyla pichardo on her way to school with her mom on monday when she was hit by an suv. the driver's wife has also been charged. >> the mother of the victim is speaking publically and demanding justice. kemberly richardson is at the courthouse in jersey city with our lead city tonight. >>> the suspects appeared via closed circuit tv from jail in in an ironic twist, we this couple also has a child, a little boy the exact same age as sheyla. her mom broke her silence today. a soft spoken woman whose words cut like a razor. >> i want him to pay for what he did. i want justice to be done for what happened. >> reporter: a mother's heartbreak, caused by fabian rodriguez who sat next to his wife, joanna rosas-alvarez. the suspects listened through a translator as the prosecutors describe what role the pair played in the horrific hit-and-run that killed 7-year-old sheyla pichardo as she walked to school with her mom. rodriguez's attorney portrayed him as a family

i'm liz cho. bill is off tonight. the chase went through three towns in new jersey. it started with officers chasing a motorcycle in paramus and moved in to hackensack where the police car slammed in to a car. eyewitness news reporter carolina leid is at the scene with the latest. >> paramus police started with a speeding motorcycle going by them and at some point on route 4 they lost that driver, that person on the motorcycle, which leads us right here to hackensack. a live look at the scene here, hackensack police picked up on this low speed pursuit, got in to the accident you see there civilian vehicle here on summit avenue. right now no word on how either the officer or the person in that vehicle are doing right now. from there the motorcycle according to police kept on going, hit a car in maywood on spring valley avenue, this all happening in the middle of the afternoon, right around 2:00 this afternoon. residents tell me they can't believe all of this unfolded at that time of day. >> rush hour, got to let the guy off, unless he did something really, really bad.

>> and i'm liz cho. >>> get right to the new information in the brussels terror investigation. and we are learning new information about the men prosecutors say were behind the deadly attacks, two brothers, khalid and brahim el back reviewy with two other men inside the airport, the man all the way on the left is believed to be the second airport suicide bomber while the one on the right is still on the run. >> all of this as thousands gathered in brussels today to remember the dozens of people killed and the hundreds who were injured. in fact, this is a live look at the growing memorial. candles, flowers, balloons for one of brussels' main squares. our coverage begins this afternoon with abc's molly hunter in brussels. >> reporter: good evening, david and liz. of those suicide bombers were deported at the syrian border last year and made his way through europe to belgium. with one dangerous terror suspect still on the run, police are chasing every lead more than 36 hours after those deadly attacks. turkey detained one of the brussels bombers on the syrian border last year, but

. >> and i'm liz cho. >>> we'll have much more on those stories in just a minute, but we begin tonight with breaking news. a man stabbed on platform in the cypress hills section of brooklyn. >> carolina leid is there with the breaking news. >> right now we have an active crime scene here in cypress hills. there's a police vehicle unit here and we've seen detectives walking up and down the street, gathering the evidence they need to continue with this case. it all happened here at the crescent street station, the j and z subway trains. this stabbing, a 22-year-old man was stabbed on the subway platform at the j train all that's at fulton and crescent streets in cypress hills. the man according to police was assaulted by a group. he is expected to survive and is right now at jamaica hospital. service was disrupted because of all this. obviously because of that police investigation, it has resumed but there are still residual delays. we did see a knife here on the platform. it was taken off the track and put up on to the platform by a worker who of course got that for police. but as of ri
