cbs reporter kenneth craig is in miami tonight. kenneth? >> reporter: liz, it's become very clear the cleanup is not going to happen overnight. all over the place, there's downed trees and power lines, and a lot of damage. >> reporter: across florida, a massive rescue and recovery effort is now underway. hurricane irma pummeled the sunshine state for a day and a half, inflicting misery in nearly every county. >> my heart goes out to the people in the keys. there's devastation. i hope everyone survives. >> reporter: the florida keys were among the hardest hit. hurricane irma was a category 4 when it made land fall on the islands. now they are littered with destroyed homes and downed trees. there's no electricity, no running water, and people may have to be evacuated. >> i can always rebuild, but the ocean, you go out there, and you are taking your chances. >> reporter: some 13 million homes and businesses across the state were in the dark on monday. officials said it will likely be weeks before everyone is back online. miami may have be spared the direct hit

craig in miami, thank you. >>> we've seen a lot of incredible images of the destruction left in irma's wake. our liz cook is taking a closer look for us now. >> just look at this. on the right is tampa bay before the storm. on the left is after, clearly something missing here, right? water. offshore winds pushed water away from the coast exposing the bay floor. here a house on the edge is no match for irma. erosion and strong waves crashed against this home's foundation until it gave way and fell into the beach. meanwhile in downtown miami construction cranes were badly damaged. two snapped in the 100 mile-per- hour wind gusts. meanwhile in the city's marina boats were swept onto shore by the strong storm surge. north into georgia historic savannah streets became roaring rivers. waves slammed against park benches and drivers went through high water in downtown and the florida keys saw a direct hit from the hurricane. flying above the damage you can see entire buildings flattened and neighborhoods overcome by high water. ectricity, or solid shelter to but the images coming from the caribbean are trul
