what is he facing and how serious are these charges, lizzie? >> they're federal charges, interfering with a flight crew. if they carried the maximum penalty that would be up to 20 years in prison plus a pretty significant fine. what you get in the affidavit that came along with the charging documents is a fairly disturbing picture of what was going on inside that plane. i kind of want to walk through different parts of what was going on. you're right, the first roifr essentially noticed things not long after takeoff from jfk. let's walk through a couple of points here. we know from the affidavit that clayton osbon showed up late, missed a crew briefing. he did talk back to the air traffic controllers, turned off the radio as you said. dimmed some of the monitors inside the cockpit and began giving what is describe as a sermon. then as things progress a little bit, he started talking about we need to take a leap of faith. this is the line that got the first officer's attention, we're not going to vegas. this is about 3 1/2 hours into the flight.

. >> cnn aviation and transportation correspondent lizzy o' leary. must have been amazing and scary to be a passenger on that plane. >> what we know is this plane was taxiing to the runway in dallas. it was headed towards chicago. it seemed like maybe this flight attendant was sort of confused. she had mentioned whether they were in houston and a passenger was a bit confused by that. then there was a scuffle going back and forth over the p.a. she said we're not take off. another flight attendant said we were. then it devolved into this screaming. you heard her raspy voice there talking about getting off the plane, mechanical problems. at least four times saying it was going to crash, talking about 9/11 and the american airlines bankruptcy which is currently ongoing. some passengers and another member of the crew subdued her. they went back to the gate. and she was taken to the hospital. the flight did get a new crew and proceed on its way to chicago eventually. >> i'm going to guess it took a little calming for the passengers before that took off. wh

we've been talking about for for the last few days and lizzie o'leary has been digging deep into thisssue. i want to ask you first about what we're finding out from the cockpit voice recorders. my understanding is we only got two hours handed over to investigators today, so how much more do we need and what will they find out from that? >> well, they'll be able to look at those last two hours, erin. right now the ntsb has them. they're downloading the data. they'll give that to the fbi who's leading that investigation. so they may not get the full picture of what happened, say, shortly after takeoff, but they'll sort of be able to back time from the emergency landing about two hours back into it. so they should be able to hear some of the things that we heard in the affidavit in that criminal complaint talking about we're not going to vegas, talking about sin, essentially that sermon that the first officer categorized captain osbon as making in the cockpit. >> we talked about a commercial airline pilot last night that ted said on these mental health screenings it relies on pilots bein

lizzie, this pilot has been charged criminally. we thought that he was having some sort of psychotic breakdown. is it surprising that he's now charged with criminal -- he's now charged federally with criminal charges. >> this is a federal charge interfering with a flight crew. he's still being held and is being medically evaluated in a hospital facility. the fbi is investigating this as are local law enforcement officials. it's unclear as this goes forward whether these charges will essentially stick. they would have to take it to a grand jury. if that moves on there would be an indictment. that's still a bit up in the air. as you said, a lot of things coming out in these sworn affidavits, these details are certainly chilling and they provide a much clearer glimpse into what was happening on that plane and they provide a clear glimpse at the first officer recognized there was something very much out of the ordinary going on and did his best to get this captain out of the cockpit and have an off-duty can't income i captain come in a
