lizzie's not happy about this. in 1936 she's an elderly woman, she's living in washington, she's holding up her boards and the monopoly board, and it says here that ms. phillips -- she'd gotten married -- it is understood she receives $500 for her patent and she gets no royalties. probably if one counts lawyers, printers and patent office fees us yahoo!d up in developing -- used up in developing it the game has cost more than making it. so why did the 1935 monopoly patent when magie had two similar ones before it? we may never know. usually with a patent you have a thing called the patent wrapper which is a document that explains to you how and where and why some of this stuff happens. that's been missing for at least 40 years and i certainly couldn't find it. so we don't exactly know what happened at the patent office. so magie and darrow die. this is darrow's obituary in "the new york times" hailing him as the inventer of monopoly. lizzie magie's is buried, and there's no mention of monopoly here on our her grave
