lizzie: yeah. these evacuations happened, people have to leave their homes at the last minute and have to make hard decisions. when i was reporting on the book, i learned about a woman named her child had just had a baby. she had to evacuate in a strangers car with her newborn son in her lap. there was a bus driver who got stuck with 22 kids and two teachers on board trying to escape town and get everyone to safety. stories like that of normal being -- normal people being thrust into these things of herod -- of heroism and survival. larry: how do they cope with this? it is so stressful, maybe you are thinking moment to moment at that point. but when you take the longer perspective, i'm sure people -- he must have asked them, why are you still here? why do you want keep -- want to keep living in this area? lizzie: you have to remember that for some of these people, they have lived in these communities for their entire lives. maybe their families have been there for decades. these are families that h

lizzie, thank you very much for joining us. i know like so many california journalists you covered a lot of fires. why was paradise different for you? why did you decide to write this book? >> i have been covering fires for awhile before the campfires in 2018. that fire was just unparalleled in terms of destruction, the number of buildings, the number of people that died. it was the first time we had seen a town wiped off the map like that before. it stuck with me and i really wanted to understand what the town had been and what it would look like as they tried to rebuild and how to figure out how to make a life there again. >> it is so timely as we are in a month of horrible fires in the state. what have you learned about how much climate change played a role in the campfire versus negligence by pge? >> it's a tricky thing to pick apart. all of these factors take effect. pge has infrastructure that hasn't been hardened and maintained which causes the fires as well. then there's also the fact of how we build in the state and wh

river fire near cold facts more than 500 animals had to be evacuated because of the fire reporter lizzie animals were taken in and cared for by a group of volunteers. why after a very busy few days, volunteers are packing up this trailer here that holds a lot of our equipment. pat eilers is the coordinator with the nevada county veterinary disaster response team. they mobilized within a few hours of the river fire, sparking on wednesday. send out an alert, saying we have a fire. this is looking nasty. be prepared soon after they showed up here to the nevada county fairgrounds in grass valley, making sure animals had a safe place to be when the fire forced them and their owners out of their homes immediately. immediately we had cars and trucks and trailers all the way down the side of the fairgrounds and out the gate. they took care of more than 500. animals horses, chickens, ducks, bunnies, llamas, you name it. we do not turn any animals away. she says they had more than 20 volunteers on site. most days, kenneth nature brought his animals here and then decided to volunteer himself when h
