whether or not we consider ourselves a local city, our regional city, an international city, it is job creation that makes the city run well. for all of us here, i know you have great hope that the city will be able to have decent jobs here that can maintain, that they can spend a good amount of their careers in, and that is why i spend a lot of time with chief adviser kim and supervisor david chiu and the other supervisors talking about how we can sustain the midmarket. that is why we passed a week ago the midmarket payroll tax exemption. we wanted to welcome new companies into the city and understand what it was blocking their ability to stay and to grow. to hear a company -- not just from the cfo, from the president. when i visited twitter, i closed the door and they allowed me to speak to their engineers, to their workers, to the people doing the engineering work atwitter. as we closed the door, i laid out -- ok, kids. what do you really want out of the city? in very plain language, they said, "mayor lee, we like the culture of the city. we like the local restaurants. we like that

narrator: sandhogs are the men of local 147, who work deep below the city. they began building the infrastructure of new york in 1872. from the subways to the sewers, the water tunnels to the highway tunnels, new york city thrives because of their work. ryan: you got one little hole in the ground, and nobody knows we're here. see the empire state building, right. that's 1,000 feet. so you figure, you go down 1,000. how high that is -- that's how far we go down. narrator: stretching more than 60 miles under the city, tunnel 3 is taking generations of workers to complete. ryan: i don't even want to imagine what my father had to go through. when we first started, it was a rough job. everything was dynamite. now, they have these machines called "moles." it's like a big drill, and it just cuts right through the ground. so there's no more dynamite. and it's still a rough job, but it's gotten to a point where it's a lot safer. in the '70s, we lost a man a mile basically. here, maybe we've had two or three deaths in the last 20 years, which is too much anyway, but i

assembled and the city family and most importantly the communities that i have always loved working with over my 30 years. i'm a fourth generation bourn and raised san franciscan so i'm a local hire. and i love this city. i grew up on a block where cops lived. i trick or treated at their houses. my best friend's father started the canine unit. i played police cops. when people ask me about community policing i tell them that i know other way to be. i was raised on it. i spent the last 30 years of my life working side by side with the community and incredible men and women of this police department are the pwbest department in the country to keep this city safe and i'm committed to do so as chief of police. being a police officer is a calling and something to be valued. i have the utmost respect for the officers who put their lives on the lean to -- line to keep the people safe and i'm proud to call myself one of them. i want to thank those who have played a significant role in my life and helped lead me to this moment. both inside and outside the department. they molded me into the kind of officer, public servant and person i'm proud to be today. durke -- during my 30 carrie

[applause] today, i know that all of our supervisors -- while this was not a noticed meeting, it was a very noticed meeting. the department heads that have been here with public works and rec and park and mta and others, the commissioners writing this, and we had a great conversation with different parts of the roadway that we had with the very soft area of golden gate park to the pathways and the panhandle, and we really hit into traffic. that is the really challenging part, which i intend to work with our supervisors and supervisor mirkarimi to make sure we try to experiment with the ways we can have dedicated bike lanes. that would be wonderful

giant is this finished fifty years ago it's the biggest hydroelectric plant in europe it powers the local cityof volgograd and sends lot smaller city to moscow hydroelectric plant behind me is a potent example of how much the volga can provide but harnessing the river like this isn't without its cost. fishermen who've been watching fish stocks for years they see the slow damage the downing of the river has done especially to russia's prized sturgeon the source of caviar popular girls about a guy hydroelectric plant has done significant damage because it stopped fish swimming up the river to spawning grounds they turned back and start swimming downstream. now we don't know where they are. within a year all these houses will go forward into the river. depending on how many of the hydroelectric plants turbines are on the water level can change suddenly and dramatically too suddenly for the banks to absorb it plays havoc with the canal so . let's see if we can only lead three ships we have enough water for last year the water level dropped because of this hydroelectric plant and it caused big prob

the city has worked closely with contractors to figure out how we can do hiring locally. this is through our citybuild program where we help individuals gain the skills needed to work in construction jobs. we have a number of big projects that are really generating the job growth and place for people to be working. so i think that in terms of the pace and number of projects that we have, in terms of identifying some key sectors to attract, in terms of providing rebates for films to come and fill in san francisco and generate additional moneys -- that is something that is a movement in the right direction. we need to work on how we do a job training in san francisco. there are many different departments and many different players, and how it is where we train our work force, whether it is youth as a community, people preparing to train for different jobs -- we have a lot of folks involved, and we did not yet have a centralized way of doing it and making sure we are targeting the right sectors. so i think we have got some work to do in that area. >> talk about the role of s
