two local city guys. >> there you go. supervisor wiener: what we have here is a very important project and a very important mission and a completely reasonable objection of neighbors who are concerned about a five-story building going in on their block, which is something we see in san francisco all the time, and there is nothing exceptional or inappropriate about people taking issue with the size of a building. i grow up in the philadelphia area, in new jersey, went to school up and down the east coast. i went to undergrad at duke university and law school at harvard. after clerking for a judge, i came out here and have been in here for the last 14 years. i always assumed i would go back to the philadelphia area because that is where my family is, but i was always interested in sanford cisco in terms of the city, culture, the amazing lgbt community -- i was always interested in san francisco. i am an attorney. i started off in private practice, doing complex litigation. in 2002, i moved to the san francisco city attorney

two local city guys. >> there you go. >> hello, welcome to meet your district supervisor. i'm linda melkonian and we're here with supervisor london breed from district 5 which includes the inner sunset, haight/ashbury, lower hate, japantown and part of hayes valley. she was one of two supervisors in 2012. we'll talk to her about the tougher issues facing the city. welcome, supervisor. thank you for joining us today. >> thank you for having me. >> let's start by talking a little about your background, where you grew up, went to school and what of jobs you've had in the past. >> i grew up in the heart of the western addition, i grew up in public housing. my grandmother raised me and my brothers and i went to public schools here in the city. ended up at u.c. davis and graduated and immediately returned back to the community and started working for the mayor's office of neighborhood services and worked on treasure island and eventually became the executive director of the african-american art and culture complex located in the western addition community, a place that i partici

city and county of san francisco. >> i am from san francisco. i grew up in the local neighborhood. i did my under deprad wait work at fisk university, where i studied political science with a concentration in public administration and worked eight years largely in the public sector. then i earned a master's degree from carnegie melon in pittsburg, pennsylvania. i spent some time as assistant executive director for a non-profit. we did work if a lot of kids in the neighborhood. i have done fundraising for candidates and issues. i have experience with the federal reserve bank of san francisco. when i look around my neighborhood and see the changes that are happening, i so there is no neighborhood grocery store. i see that small businesses in particular are coming and going, and they haven't been able to really sustain themselves. from my work experience in working for the city in the mayor's office as well as in the non-profit, i had a good sense as to what some of the challenges were. when i look in the future, i could see more challenges coming. i thought i had a set of experiences

added to the code, there was discussion about reorganizing article 2 to mimic it and deliver to local cities, even draft an ordinance that reworked article 2 ask moved definitions into article 1. and this work is the basis for how the department is proceeding on this project. my illustration, though, and kind of excitement about this came from a trip i made to san francisco loma last year for exhibit on [speaker not understood], a famous industrial designer that made everything from record players to coffee grinders. and his quote kind of stood out to me. there were a lot of quotes, but this stood out. there is no room for irrelevant thing. we have the resources. irrelevancy is out. he was talking about the things in your life and the objects. but i transferred that to the planning code, getting rid of irrelevance because we don't have the resources for that. so, actually, based on the design principles, i came up with four guiding principles on how we're proceeding with this. ~ first one is innovate. i want to create a format that better utilizes web-based access. the second one is to make

local cities could do to fight against that? >> this book is a reality check it betty respects you do not want to we like pollyanna. you don't have to be detroit to face hard fiscal realities particularly of northeast ohio. it almost comes down which part of this city's irresponsibility is effective and how you compensate? that is almost with the entire country different cities and metropolitan areas to say you will not invest in transit, we will. you will not expand we will. it is the same issues for a whole range of different services. this is very hard and difficult but the resources and the expertise go back to the alternatives we will add bedtick year. >> cities and metropolitan areas don't have a choice. they cannot print the money they have to balance their budget every year so they will find a way to do this. it won't be pretty that we will reinvent the municipal bond market out of necessity >> we need the investment strategy to make that work we have to break all to the table. what is becoming about this book is to come
