but our local school boards are making individual decisions. overwhelmingly at my encouragement and partnership with them to protect health, the kids are in classrooms. they are not wearing masks. they are learning and they are recognizing the value of that in this day and age. i think a lot of folks across our state saw the damage that happened when kids in certain areas were not in classrooms. and even when they were impaired by their ability to learn because of different requirements that were placed on them. so overwhelmingly south dakotaed is recognizing the value of normal life, normal learning for our children and also saw the detrimental effects on their mental health and their emotional stability when huge dramatic changes were made in many other states. i think dr. atlas, what's interesting is how many people have moved to south dakota. we've had thousands of people move to this state so there kids could be in the classrooms and have a normal life. its been amazing for me to for people to recognize that across the country and move her

school board to much fanfare last year. you received a hero award from sanford health for your dedication and leadership in getting children safely back in school. and the localr to avoid angry parents. what is your message to them when they stand up shouting to you and think that this is part of some great conspiracy? >> thank you for the question. i will always do what i believe is safest and best for kids and i try to make those decisions as a physician based on data and evidence and not based on emotion. i think it's important for us in public health and in pediatrics to try to be a voice for children because they don't often have a voice in these situations, and one of the major fallouts we saw from this pandemic last year was the mental health effect of our children and that was a direct result of not being in school. we were all reminded of the many things that schools provide for our kids, nutrition, physical activity, access to the internet, access to adults that are checking in with them and when that all went away we all saw the devastating results of that and i'm looking to avoid that again, and if that takes temporarily having kids wear face cove

there's no referendum or race for local school board to distract the voters. they have a 36 day campaign to hear the arguments of the various parties, and then they make a single decision. because it is just one decision, it is much easier to tally the result and much harder to figure results. election administration in canada has been pretty good. i mentioned earlier in the show about mail-in ballots. we think there are about 1.2 million. in many u.s. jurisdictions, election officials send out ballots to everyone on the electoral roles so they can avoid having to come in if they were nervous about covid. but because not everyone was at the same address, because there were individuals who had changed where they were, they were ballots floating around that people worried might fall into fraudulent hands or might be returned by the wrong people. that i think undermined confidence in the u.s. election system. another challenge that we had, and you will remember well, is that elections in the u.s. are administered locally, by states and counties and cities, and th

let a local school board make that decision. recognize that that's not always feasible, that you have a lot of holdouts, you have a lot of businesses resisting this. so i understand why the administration stepped in to try to force these decisions. but to the extent that they're doing that, they're now creating a political battleground around vaccinations, that you're going to have other people opposing it. and the question is, how much are we going to pick up in terms of increased vaccination? i said we're at 78% of adults right now. i believe we would have gotten easily to 80% just on a normal trajectory. so, where are we going to end up, maybe at 85%, a little bit higher? so you might pick up a couple of extra percentage points in terms of the amount of americans, adults, that are vaccinated, but you're going to pay a consequence for that in terms of turning this into more of a political debate. so, we have to carefully weigh those competing interests. william brangham: i want to ask you about vaccinating kids. we know pfizer
