part of the campus here at san jose city college is under lockdown. specifically police are focussing on the tech building. this all started back around 4:30 when the school received a text about a gunman on campus. police have gone building by building, room by room essentially making sure that is not the case and as of right now we do not have any confirmed reports of anyone see ago gunman on campus. we're keeping our crews here and we'll have more information for you tonight on the 10:00 news but keep in mind it is a campus lockdown there at san jose city college. >>> chief meteorologist bill martin here with us and yesterday at 7:00 you talked to us about dropping temperatures and boy are we feeling it. >> frost advisory for most of the rest f us except san francisco. we mentioned that. take a look at the forecast model because as this shower activity moves in, temperatures are going to warm up. showers aren't coming in for awhile. you wake up cold tomorrow. as i pointed out temperatures freezeing and below freezing. by tomorrow mid-morning it's s

they did confirm that the campus is in lockdown. they did not confirm whether or not there is indeed a gunman on the school campus. so at this point we do know that san jose city college is in a state of lockdown. news chopper 2 continues to make its way south. we'll update you. >> vigils being held to remember the victims of the school massacre in newtown, connecticut. there was one last night and more are planned, including a vigil that's going on right now. ken pritchett is there and tells us why the owner of that restaurant wanted to get involved. >> reporter: i want you to take a look at this. this is a small display of the connection that people all over the country feel with the school shooting in connecticut. we in albany. r. about a dozen people are gathered for a candle light vigil. this may seem like an unusual place for a vigil. it's not about the restaurant or the setting or the distance. but about the man behind it or rather about his brother who was killed in a random act of violence two years ago in richmond. he said

again, this entire campus on lockdown. it's been on lockdown since about 4:30 this afternoon. one person called, didn't identify themselves, said they'd seen an armed intruder on campus. since then there have been no other reports of an armed intruder. nevertheless, police taking this very seriously. they have swarmed the campus and are going through each and every room now checking to make sure there is no gunman on campus. >> one of the students told us given the time of year so close to the holidays that the campus is not a full campus. there are significantly less people on than would be on a normal time of year. right now, again, live pictures from news chopper 2. you can see officers making their way around the campus. we'll watch this, monitor the situation. if we get any new developments we let you know. we want to move on to other news. a freeze warning is in effect tonight for parts of the bay area. all across the region today people spent the day preparing for one of the coldest nights of the year. we have live team coverage. we begin right now with bill martin who

breaking news out of san jose city college where they have been on lockdown at least partial lockdown the last 90 minutes or so. police are on the scene right now students are being allowed to leave after the report of a person on campus with a gun. and joining us live is professor charles haimleer. we understand you're an english professor at city college. what's going on. >> reporter: sure. right now, students, staff and employees are evacuating the campus. there are two areas that are still restricted in the science complex and the check building and no one is allowed to go into that area. so if you are a student with a car in that area or if you need to get a bus that has a bus stop in that area, they are in place. >> professor, who called in that there was a possibly a gunman on campus or how did police become aware that this was a possibility? >> i don't know who called it in. but i work in the first floor of the library and one of the other administrators got a phone call from the vice president that there had been an alert. and then we started sheltering in place based on that

the school was placed on lockdown. and one hour later, the partial lockdown and students that were taking final exams were told to leave, immediately. except for the ones inside of the technology building. they had to stay inside before they were given the all clear. the school president say that class's will resume tomorrow. no word on who told the school that there was a gunman on campus. that is still currently under investigation reggie kumar, kron 4 news. >> a spike in residential and auto burglaries have residents on car. a spike in both residential and auto burglaries. has hill. since november 1st. there have been nine residential burglaries, and at least fourteen auto break-ins. and police describe a significant spike in burglaries in the greenleaf neighborhood, just north of east dunne avenue. police volunteers went door to door with fliers advising residents with advice about locking doors, securing property and keeping valuables in cars out of sight. police have increased patrols in the greenleaf neighborhoo

this entire district, though, is on lockdown. we also know that danbury hospital, not far away, has now been reportedly -- three people as a result of this shooting. i have no idea what the extent of the injuries may be. danbury hospital now having confirmed that three people -- a local report that three people have gone for treatment at that hospital. not sure if bridgeport has received any injured but they certainly got the calls early this morning. also want to let you know that the children have apparently been evacuated to a nearby fire house. but interestingly enough were in that school. so many schools have a very strict protocol for an emergency situation in which they barricade themselves in the classrooms as best they can staying low until they get some kind of indication that it's safe to evacuate the school. as we continue to collect more information, shooting at sandy hook elementary in newtown, connecticut. we're going to bring it to you. we're going to take a quick break. we'll be right back. ♪ (announcer) when sub

all schools in the area obviously in lockdown. greg melvin, let's recap what jay carney had to say when the president was notified at 10:30 this morning in the oval office by john brennan. >> no presidential reaction just yet, but his spokesman jay carney did say during a news conference a short time ago in part, "i think it's important on a day like today to view this as in the eyes of a father and others that are parents certainly do which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected." again, that coming from jay carney about an hour or so ago. that school that you mentioned there, sandy hook elementary school, it's a k through 4 school, we're told. that means that the kids who go to school there are somewhere between 5 and 10 years old. we do know that after that call came in at about 9:40 this morning that law enforcement evacuated classroom by classroom. they went room by room. those nearby the school, we're told, took in some of the students as well. at this point as you guys just indicated, we are still waiti

about two hours later, the college switched to a partial lockdown as law enforcement focused its search on the technology building. >> reporter: everyone was asked to evacuate. since this is finals week, there were not as many students on campus. those who came ready to take their exam were turned away. >> i came about 10 minutes early to class, and all these police cars came out of nowhere. >> reporter: officials say no one confirmed seeing a gunman on campus. students and teachers were alerted by text message and phone call. they were asked to cover windows, turn lights off, and lock the doors. >> we do as much as we can to protect ourselves and the student, and this definitely -- we'll be more alert in the future. >> reporter: by 7:45 tonight, the lockdown was lifted, and the college president said classes will resume tomorrow. >>> another day of funerals in newtown, connecticut, today. two were victims were laid to rest while a wake was held for another. citizens and investigators continue to try and make sense of the tragedy there. >> reporter: tearful morning and the secretary day

teams searched the campus room by room during a three-hour lockdown. city college officials say the school immediately sent a text message and went into lockdown mode. students and faculty were released to classrooms as officers searched the five- story building. >> we definitely barricaded down and sat there and hushed our voices got away from all the windows, made sure we weren't anywhere near where anybody can look in and we were worried. we were afraid. >> you can understand why. in the end, police weren't able to find any indication that a gunman was ever on campus. >>> this morning, more details are emerging about the life of connecticut gunman adam lanza. workers at a newtown hair salon where adam lanza and his mother were regular customers say they never heard him speak. they say nancy lanza would give her son directions about what to do and where to go. investigators are still not clear what motivated lanza but connecticut's chief medical examiner says he is seeking genetic clues. cbs news's marlie hall has more from newtown. >>> reporter: hun

the entire school district went into lockdown. the reaction was swift and the actions of teachers throughout this district were serious. renee burn is one of these teachers, she's a kindergarten teachers' aide, holly elementary school, and she knew some of the teachers at sandy hook elementary as well. her school was in lockdown a couple of hours following the shooting. renee, thank you for talking to us. take me inside your school and tell me how this day unfolded for you and when you ultimately found out why you were in lockdown. >> it started out as a normal day. we had our hol lay party scheduled for our kindergarten class which was scheduled to start about 10:15. and about 9:45, we heard the announcement that we were in lo lockdown. >> did you think this would be a drill? >> i knew it wasn't a drill because we had about 60 parents scheduled to come into the school for our celebration. and i knew there was something going on. but never, never thought it was anything like this. the last time we went into a lockdown was because
