you lockdown the hospital and secure the area. you know you're going to receive victims -- you could have people that walk in or come in by ambulance. both could be presentations you have to anticipate. and the personnel in the hospital, fortunately we have also been through a active shooter training here because as you know the hospitals themselves are not immune to these kind of events. >> doctor, we've seen a lot of patients being air lifted to hospitals. what does that suggest to you? why are we seeing so much helicopter work in this one? >> i think that's a good question. that's a great capacity to bring -- especially when you have multiple casualties and you're going to be addressing that by taking -- identifying your level one trauma center and a lot of casualties will go there and other hospitals like ours in the area will be supporting those. so that's a quick way to get these victims to the proper care. they are going to be triaged and most of them sound like with penetrating injuries like this, they likely will need to

schools are in lockdown mode. u.s. capitol police have increased security around the capitol but this is only as a precaution. we just got word from the white house that the president has been briefed several times about the unfolding situation at the navy yard. the by the deputy chief of staff. the president has directed his team to stay in touch with the federal officials, that would include naval officials, the fbi, local officials. there is a huge presence on the scene there and continues to grow from s.w.a.t. teams, d.c. police, naval security personnel, park police, capitol police, u.s. marshals, an enormous presence there. let's go now to nbc's pete williams who has been following this for us. pete, what can you add? >> reporter: okay. so we have a little more information here about what's going on. there are initial unconfirmed reports, and i think this is what everyone is concerned about at this point. it does sound like this is winding down here. there is a report of a location where the person with the gun,

. >> reporter: that came after more than 12 hours of a neighborhood on lockdown while police worked to confirm that there was no second shooter. thousands of workers at the washington navy yard were ordered to remain in the office building while the crime sen scene was investigated. the tragedy began to unfold just before 8:30 monday morning with reports that a man had opened fire inside the heavily secured washington navy yard building number 197 a workplace for nearly 3,000. police say aaron alexis allegedly shot many of his victims from an overlook on the third or fourth floor of the building firing into an atrium with a semiautomatic rifle, sources say, alexis was e essentially a sniper able to easily target his victims. some of those killed have now been identified.

airport located across the river from the navy yard and several local schools have been put on lockdown as a precaution. pete williams joins me now live with new information. i know you've been working sources all day. >> yes, and just got some updated information here. the casualty numbers keep changing. it appears that there are at least 8 dead and 16 wounded. and that number undoubtedly will continue to change. most of the victims were on the third floor -- third and fourth floors of building 197, the building where the scene of this shooting was today, this naval sea systems command. a single gunman got into that building is the best information we have, using the i.d. of an employee at the building to get inside of the gunman in the building was shot and killed. the person whose i.d. he was using is in washington, d.c. police custody, was arrested at his home and whether he has any involvement in the shooting or not is not at all clear to us at this point. we just don't know. authorities do believe they have now gotten the identification of the person who actually fired the shots a

there are other buildings at the navy yard that are in lockdown. navy official said, this is still -- this is not over. this is still ongoing. >> jennifer, you just touched on something that raises another question here. that's whether or not all 12 of these people who were killed were in building 197. if it does extend to another building that, you know, might give us a little bit more information about how many people might have been involved here. >> my understanding, martha, is that 10 of the 12 individuals who were killed were killed in building 197. we know that at least one security guard was killed. he may have been killed outside of building 197. closer to the gate. it's not clear how these individuals got on to the base. whether they had an id and were able to get through the base or whether there was a breach of the perimeter of the base. because as you know, there is high security at this base where, you know, building 197 is part of the navy sea command. that is -- you know, that is an area where they have very, very, you know, top sec

the fact that the city is not on lockdown suggests that they are not too concerned about the safety and security of the citizens here, but they're still taking it seriously. the person, they say, is until sort of military uniform. and they believe that the person was spotted on surveillance inside the facility, so they have a reason enough to be concerned and have told us all to be on the lookout. >> thank you stretvery much. the second story is the man hunt. the fbi and local police are still searching for at least one other possible suspect in the navy yard shooting. one of the gunmen was killed by police. but they are looking for a second suspect. and here's the way they have described it. an african-american male between 40 and 50 years of age with a medium complexion and gray sideburns. he was wearing an olive/drab-colored military uniform. out front our tim clemente. and john mcguire. from what we know, let me just start with you, tim. i'm looking here at the bio from the navy. he had not worked at the naval yard. you have to have security checks to enter this facility. how do you
