(cheers and applause) jeff, ms., producer, musician. lois lowry, newberry author of over 30 books -- (applause) -- one of which is "the giver" and now the two of you have gotten together to make a new movie in which you star as "the giver" and it opens in theaters august 15. why did you want to make this movie, man? >> well, it was all about the photograph on the cover that lois took. >> stephen: it kind of looks like you. >> well, yeah, but i thought it looked like my father, lloyd bridges -- >> many years ago. -- this was 18 years ago. and i said, you know, i want to make a movie that my kids can watch. looks like it has the newberry stamp award on there. my dad's up for it and, you know -- >> stephen: did you make it? well -- >> stephen: your dad passed away many years ago. >> we made the video version of it. >> stephen: okay. and you may see it at some point in time. we do this past-future thing. you never know how it might work out. >> he's trying to find it, it's in his garage someplace. >> stephen: are there

it is based on this global best seller 10 million copies the top children's book ever sold by lois lowryis a world where there's no choice, no differences no winning, no losing. everyone is the same everyone is equal. but beneath the surface there are realities. the star is jonah. we will see a lot of him in the future. estes canned with the role as the receiver of memories. all of the characters had no memories because it's too horrible to deal with. so monday night at the premiere it has a fantastic cast meryl streep, katie holmes even tailor swift makes an appearance. we asked them what is it about this story that has resinated with so many people if there was one particular memory they could live without. >> every generation has its iconic anti establishment literature. for me it was catcher on the rye in 1951. there is an anti establishment element to this book, a call to young people not to settle for -- dr or to cease the prophecy of the older generation. >> one memory in your very young life that you could not live without? >> i think good holidays with my family. we like to eat

and lois lowry. what a great group at one table. welcome, one and all.first read this when it first came out? >> a couple of years after. 18 years ago. i was looking for a project. coversaw this wonderful when i was looking through a catalog of kids books because i wanted my kids to see this movie. i came across this cover with a real old guy on the cover and i said, this looks interesting. i started to read it and i loved it. it was a kids book. as an adult, i was just knocked out to find out my kids said, we studied that book in school. there is a lesson plan. i am getting more and more excited. i said this would be a cinch to get off the ground. and then i find it is on the list of banned books as well, which further excited me, which further excited. -- excited me. but it proved to be quite difficult to the controversy stopped us from getting this through for 18 years. the world that lois created is an amazing one and a lot of the story takes place injonas' mind -- in jonas' mind. the challenge was, how do we get this to financiers where they can see
