[applause] it was a great party. >> a loja. it is truly an unexpected honor to receive this award. from the columbus foundation. which for native hawaiians translates into the before they arrived in hawaii. i have asked my husband and my daughter to help me deliver these. used to be people would know me first as a poet upon seeing me in my room as an activists would asked if i still wrote poetry. i would respond with this testimony. there was never any conflict between my poetic voice in my political voice. i should also say that i considered reading and writing a practice in the way of engaging with the imagination and ultimately the unknown. these never to be repeated moments can be full of surprises. i would like to honor my brother eric who wanted to be a poet but ended up with a more complicated life. this poem is dedicated to him and to all of the many hawaiian men and boys who are incarcerated. >>
