since the loma prieta earthquake we have made great strides. we rebuilt the city stronger, and great strides in retro fits especially on the bay bridge and new buildings. and the catastrophic plan under nancy's leadership and the partnership with fema, we've enhanced some warnings and made a concerted effort to focus on personal preparedness and get message out residents really need to help take care of themselves and others. so i am pleased to be part of the legacy and want to thank all of you for your hard work, time and effort to help others. so thank you. loma prieta means dark mountain. and we would always say during the earthquake we were kind of on the dark side of the mountain. san francisco did an incredible job but to give you a little bit of background to the city. i think this experience also brought me to city government. i had worked in the non-profit field for over 25 years. the city of watsonville was not prepared to communicate with the 60% spanish-speaking community. the city was in a political conflict with its mexican-american leadership ruling by the supreme court to go from citywide elections to city elections that were to occur three weeks after the earthquake with the hope of its electing their first latino councilmember in years. neither the county nor city had a strong relationship with the spanish-community organization and after the hospital and the foundation was damaged, our county health department headquarters was about 14 miles away and we quickly knew that we were on our own. and our clinic staff right after the earthquake continued to pr

as most of you all know, how many of you guys were here during loma prieta? good. so you guys know this was a huge event for this bay area region. it had a huge geographic imprint and affected a whole lot of different types of communities. urban, as you were suburban and rural. for me being a young recovery worker, it was quite amazing how many different kinds of issues about $10 billion and i remember years ago it was six and seven and now we say it was about $10 billion in terms of insured sand underinsured losses. there were major issues specifically for folks who lived in multifamily structures. there were donations from management, government coordination with non-profit organizations and access and functional needs and also the efficiency of government-run systems and programs. i have to say at the state level there was a lot of energy in those days. in order to meet the needs of the communities and survivors, you know, the legislature met and actually passed about 37 bills. isn't that amazing? 37 bills to address loma prieta relief issues. these bills covere

work here in the bay area to address the a lot of deficiencies and issues that became apparent after loma prieta. also i think it's important to acknowledge a lot of our community partners and having worked down here in the bay area for a couple years as part of the bay initiative. we have emily white and greg smith here from red cross who are part of our advisory team. alyssa domo who carries the flag forward being executive director and working with a lot of nonprofits in san francisco and even extending elsewhere now. now a lot of the work that's being done is being done throughout the state. also here hodge who is a huge partner from the faith community here in the bay area representing hunters point bayview area and just did a tremendous job in boosting awareness and preparing that community for a lot of different hazards that could strike them. also yokilly recommendo. another intermediary group that works with nonprofits. once again, the bay area is just an incubator, just so important in terms of this whole concept. i also wanted to mention a lot of the work that's done in the pri

so the earthquake was on tuesday, and it wasn't until friday that the world figured out that loma prieta was not next to san francisco and oakland, that it was down near santa cruz and watsonville and the president of the united states shows up and the first thing that happened is they walk him down the middle of pacific avenue in this area that everybody had been forbidden to go in for the last four days and the business people are kind of going, now, wait a minute. this is the most guarded person in the world and he's going right where you say we can't go. and there are secret service guys up on the roofs of the buildings and all that stuff. so that created a little bit of a problem because, you know, recovery's not singular. recovery is pleural. -- recovery is plural. recovery is thousands of people, individuals, families, groups, organizations, businesses, communities, regions, each organism in its own way having decisions to make and needing to be empowered to make those decisions and to do the things that they need to do to recover. and, you know, as a public agency you can be in t

it was a mission revivial style in morira loma park. we had made it large enough for the family to be on the same for. we got -- bought another house in san francisco which we still live in. aside from that point, my office got notice azide do for any sort of additions that occur in the general vicinity. my dental office is more than a mile away. i spotted about a year ago. i know this the setback was pretty severe. it seemed compared to what i am used to sing. staff had also -- it looked like a box on the top of the house. i call the staff, i forget whether it was mr. cabreras and said, what is going on here? he mentioned there was a historical issue that the addition to the top of the house was not supposed to look like the rest of the house. i said, that does not make any sense to me. the fact the original design apparently had a tile shed roof and where the addition was so it looks like everything else which is mission revival in the neighborhood and to put just a box on the top without the kind of finishing is not right. at the ver
