over the years he's covered some of the biggest local stories in the bay area including the loma prieta fire as well as international stories. he told us about a fire in shata county and the sudden flair up that had him wondering if he would make it out alive. >> i'm craig heaps. the year was 1992. the place shasta. reporter cruz and i were covering the story. this fire is moving erratically. it's moving with winds that cannot be predicted. it is in fact, one of the scariest things i've ever seen. one of the scariest things i've ever seen was no exaggeration. here is part of the story the viewers at home didn't get that night. ben and i had stopped along a two lane mountain road right at the edge of the flames. suddenly the wind stopped blowing against our backs and started blowing into our faces. the trees behind us that had not been burning, exploded into orange flames. both sides of the road for as far as we could see were on fire. we jumped in the car not sure if we would win the race with the fire around us. finally we made it clear of the burning forest and made it to a cross road

building and sipping -- single story car shed known as the space that was heavily damaged in the loma prieta earthquake. in 1988 the car barn was saved by a group called the friends of the geneva powerhouse friends formed to oppose the demolition of the car barn and stabilized it in 1999 to be used for recreational purposes and related uses consistent with the parks and recreation mission. on march 13, 2007, the city of san francisco board of supervisors appropriated $1444490 for the repair of the car barn. the friends developed a plan for the restoration and adapted uses of the car barn which included restoration of historic features and accessibility improvements and student lounge and retail spaces. the parks and recreation departmental indicated $880,000 towards the project. in 2009, as a result of the city budget deficit, the $144490 allocated to the car barn which rescinded. in response to this loss of funds these friends initiated pro bono architectural services for the renovation of the car barn. darling design has won the competition and donated services in more that $200,000 includ

sleepless night in chile after another earthquake 7.6 magnitude after shock bigger than the 1989 loma prieta earthquake in the bay area a day after an 8.2 earthquake caused six deaths and damaged thousands. new photographs show a huge crack on a roadway and structural damage inside a building. chile is the most earthquake reason areas in the word and people there have been good at implementing building codes and evacuation plans a reason that so many survived. >> majority of members are coming to terms with the legalization of marijuana. a poll finds three forths of americans feel legalization is inevitable whether they support it or not. only 15 percent say they would be bothered if people in their neighborhood used marijuana in their home and 63 percent would be bothered by use in public. the survey suggest that the public support to move away from mandatory sentences for nonviolent drug offenders by 2-1 margin. >> governor brown is defending his three-year-old criminal justice realignment law but says he is open to making improvements. the democratic governor says many law enforcement off

and this is year of 2014 is also going to be the 25th anniversary of loma-prieta., anniversaries are always just that fabulous opportunity to think about what we need to do personally and also as a community to get prepared. so, i want to give you those reminders about checking your stash. one of the most important things to really check always is that list of contact numbers for friends and family to make sure that we can reconnect if we get disconnected from our housing. and keeping that clear list of medications, too, you know, current and a few extras laying around. along the lines of the disaster preparedness, you know, we did have a tsunami exercise this last month and tying into earthquakes again, tsunamis are caused by earthquakes. and what the city did was we had a three-day exercise where we practiced alert and evacuation and notification, then disaster response, and then after that long-term planning for recovery. and joanna fraguli played a very important role on behalf of the mayor's office on disability because she was embedded in the joint informatio
