i'm the conservation chair of the loma prieta chapter of the sierra club and a member of the executive committee, and as some of you may know this project if we call it a project crosses two chapters of the sierra club chapter and the san francisco bay bay chapter and the loma prieta chapter and i am chosen to say the chapters of are one mind and extremely doubtful in going away from the dosen program. we supported it in 2002. and thought it was an excellent idea. we do recall it was the preferred alternative at that time and i was actually on a planning commission on city council at that time and i thought the decision of the board of supervisors was well considered to take the preferred alternative. we don't see any really good reason to get away from that. we could see possibly expanding it, and we're an environmental organization. john gear was one of our founders and the whole concept of opening up wild places for recreation cuts across the grain. >> >> we think you need to be careful and did a wonderful job with the dosen program and should be commended for that and we hope the p

jolt, then inevitably the fires that follow such as those that ignited in the marina district in loma prieta. firefighters of the time stood around while the water system failed them and they had to stand around and watch the city burn. survivors remember that. >> i had a cousin that was a fire fighter and he came to our home and said, get out as quickly as possible. all the water has been lost, there's no way to fight the fires. and my mother saw seven fires from our back porch right after the earthquake. >> reporter: the city rebuilt and ask itself this question. >> you want to keep water to keep people alive or to use water to fight fire and it's that vicious circle. >> reporter: san francisco decided to have both. two water systems one for people, one for firefighter. but the problems say engineers are the pipes are underground and can easily rupture in in multiple places at the same time. especially in places like the marina. >> we can bypass the break part and recreate the loop. so we can have water. we will have water. >> reporter: and san francisco now has something the city of 06 di

we have our own city hall that was severely damaged in the loma prieta earthquake. we have the new san francisco hospital building that will be opening in 2016. the retrofitted fire station and the water supply system and the soft story mandatory retrofit program that is going to be upgrading some of our most important vulnerable affordable housing. the city can't really do it all for everybody. i always like to use the anniversaries of these big disasters as a reminder that each of us need to take this responsibility and make us as prepared as possible. this is my reminder that i give you probably at least twice a year to make a plan, especially communication plan and a reunification plan. put together a kid with your basic grab and go features and remember to include your important medications or assistive devices and think about the ways that you too can become an emergency respond tore help out our friends, our neighbors and our families to get through a difficult time. the way we do that is by training. if you haven't already taken training through the nerd pro
