correspondent jonathan hunt is on long beach tonight.athan, the storm is making landfall right now. send it over to you. >> bret, as the storm makes landfall, we are on the northern edge of the hurricane, as it comes ashore. northern edge means you are at the most risk from the storm surge. you can see out here, the waves behind me have been whipping up all day. we have been getting them 12, 15 feet. the water is coming underneath this the famous long beach boardwalk. this is what everybody feared. i can tell you, i was here 14 months ago, bret, when hurricane irene came through and the flooding that i've seen down to my left here, going out underneath the boardwalk, out on the streets where all the homes are on long beach is already much, much worse than irene. further left, because of the conditions here and the camera angle, you can't see it. but there is a lifeguard station that last year 14 months ago in irene was swept off its foundation. it's done it again. the authorities have been appealing to people all day to get out. get out

live in long beach along long island's south shore.nd i know you're stuck, i believe, you're cut off. tell me what's going on there this morning, walk me through everything. >> reporter: yeah, we've been in this situation essentially since yesterday afternoon because the flooding started very early, started around 4:00 p.m. and what happened right away is that all of the entrances and exits to our hotel got flooded, so we were separated. i was in the hotel and my crew was outside the hotel and they had trouble getting back in. and now we're stuck in the sand, all of our vehicles are because all of the streets are beached. these are city streets, but you can see this is a beach here. it's about a foot worth of sand brought in. and forgive me for wincing and turning away, but we're getting blasted by the sand. the wind is still very, very high here. when the high tide came in yesterday during the height of the storm, the ocean turned into a raging river, one resident said it was like the colorado river and that it had this real fury to i

. >> pelley: long beach island, a barrier beach on the new jersey shore, was evacuated ahead of sandy. one police official said there todait could be days or weeks before residents are allowed back. chip reid is about to show you why. he's in somers point. >> reporter: from the air, long beach island, new jersey, appears to be crisscrossed by canals but, in fact, the storm surge brought ashore by sandy filled the streets with water. many homes on the barrier island are partially submerged. some knocked off their foundations. whole fleets of boats have been swept from their moorings and deposited on what was once dry ground or left in crumpled heaps. search and rescue crews spent the daylight hours looking for jersey shore residents who may have been stranded by the fierce storm. on another barrier island, some houses in the town of seaside heights are half buried in sand. one couple whose home was inundated with water clung to a tree until they were rescued by police. nearby, a pier with an amusement park was destroyed when it was swamped by enormous waves. state officials say several

and the waters are the rising waters that will come over this berm and into long beach. this beach, several thousand, are scrambling, people all along the path of sandy are scrambling to buy last-minute supplies while they can, if they can. with sandy bearing down, at this trader joe's supermarket in new york, people were lining up. it's as though many only finally realized the monster storm was about to strike. >> i have no food at home. >> reporter: in some cities, shelves were stripped bare. >> we have batteries, we have flashlights. >> reporter: people are tweeting pictures in pennsylvania. the entire supermarket aisle cleared out. in new york, a run on canned goods. in this picture, no bread, no water, only really long lines. others filled up their cars with expectation that gas stations will be shutting down. and everywhere, generators are a hot commodity. >> i'm looking at a generator. it's time to have backup. >> reporter: the wisconsin company generex shipped thousands of generators to meet the demand. and lowe's has increased product delivery to stores in sandy'
