chip reid is in long beach island, new jersey, tonight. chip. >> reporter: well, good evening, scott. here on long beach island, as in many beach communities, people keep building closer and closer to the water. it's a gam welthat many people on the jersey coast have now lost. one after the other, homes along the shoreline on long beach island, new jersey, are in shambles. this one appeared to have floated in from somewhere farther up the beach. massive dunes had been built to protect these homes, but hurricane sandy deposited those countless tons of sand in the street where it takes a bull doze tore carve a path. sandy tossed boats around here like toys, leaving some in piles, others scattered far and wide. bob davis, who rode out the storm in his home nearby, says in 40 years on this island, he's never seen a storm with anything like this kind of power. >> we made it through. and it's just the cleanup now. but it's going to take-- my estimation, with two years to get the island back in shape. >> reporter: kyle scheibner and jen smith's ho

on long beach island right here in the middle of new jersey you have very low lying areas. end of the island, up by harvey cedars. you'll have this massive mound of water come up, maybe 10 or 11 feet with wave on top of that, that will go over that island and it may wash out some places on the island as happened before. on fire island, have you a little different thing. here the waves are going to be higher up there because there will be a long duration of southerly winds pounding there. i'm very fearful for fire island and those water front homes even though they are elevated. >> finally the big island, manhattan island, new york city, what will the effects be on manhattan and in the outer boroughs, including staten isla island, brooklyn, queens. >> so two things in manhattan. big threat is for low lying areas where they've evacuated -- water may even get a little higher than that. but taking out the subways, getting saltwater into the subways and the tunnels, that's a huge threat in manhattan. the other threat is that the high-rise buildings -- people at the very highest

. >> pelley: long beach island, a barrier beach on the new jersey shore, was evacuated ahead of sandy. one police official said there todait could be days or weeks before residents are allowed back. chip reid is about to show you why. he's in somers point. >> reporter: from the air, long beach island, new jersey, appears to be crisscrossed by canals but, in fact, the storm surge brought ashore by sandy filled the streets with water. many homes on the barrier island are partially submerged. some knocked off their foundations. whole fleets of boats have been swept from their moorings and deposited on what was once dry ground or left in crumpled heaps. search and rescue crews spent the daylight hours looking for jersey shore residents who may have been stranded by the fierce storm. on another barrier island, some houses in the town of seaside heights are half buried in sand. one couple whose home was inundated with water clung to a tree until they were rescued by police. nearby, a pier with an amusement park was destroyed when it was swamped by enormous waves. state officials say several

long beach island, new jersey was one of the many communities reshaped by the storm.ater tore through the homes there knocking many of them right off of their foundations. look at that picture. boats littering the area, some washing up right against the homes. cars and motorcycles scattered about everywhere. there is no power, there is no clean water, and there is no gasoline in the area. officials are keeping everyone off of the island until at least saturday. we will speak live with a local from this town who is hold up in his home and can't go anywhere in just a bit. >> people coming together is what is also going to happen i believe on november 7th. you can see quite a rough surf here on long beach island this morning. i can tell you since we have gotten here about an hour and a half ago the water is starting to inch up. this part of the beach is very narrow. long beach island is about 18 miles long. we're at the south end. you can see how far this water is coming and just how close it is to these dunes. you can see fencing along here. they've had significant beach erosion issues in the past on this part of the island. there are homes right on the ocean front here. so definitely a concern as sandy moves closer to the jersey shore. of course flooding a concern as well. right now this entire island as are many of the coastal communities, the barrier islands in new jersey, under a voluntary evacuation order. totally optional at this point b. people are preparing their homes. we'll be monitoring the storm throughout its duration. that is a live look at the conditions this morning. we'll send it back to you. >> all right. marisa brady in new jersey, thank you so much. we'll be checking on the delaware bea

if you're to the north of this, atlantic city, long beach island, into the new york city area, all of long island, coastal connecticut and all of coastal rhode island, this angle of approach piles the water up for 12 to 24 hours. the high tide cycle we're about to approach will be very impressive at day break. the one later tonight between 7:00 and 9:00 right after sunset, that's the one that's going to be destructive and has the possibility to be historical. the center of the storm, we've had an eye feature trying to form. it shows signs of that as the eye. as the storm continues to progress the winds will dramatically pick up. don't be fooled with the winds. they're similar to when you went to bed. as the storm begins to move towards land it will increase this afternoon. the power outage will start in earnest and spread inland this afternoon but especially this evening as this makes landfall. when those 60 to 80 mile per hour gusts hit, trees will come down. high wind warnings from maine to virginia. never seen warnings covering this much real estate. the winds aren't bad. ocean cit

martha: bulldozers pushing sand back to clear some of those roads in long beach island which is a barrier island. seaside heights is out there. this is one of the areas we've been watching so closely but there are a lot of barrier islands that come along on the jersey shore where generations have been spending their summers for many, many years. so, many people who can't get down there at all to see the damage may be getting a first look at it from the aerial shoppers themselves. they're squinting and tv screen to see if they spot their house as we go by in the choppers. we don't have control over these images. we're getting what we're getting. that is a look at long beach island right now. more on that coming up. >>> in ohio as well the race is on to restore power today in the westlake area. there are nearly 200,000 people who are in the dark. that has complicated the efforts to clear debris and repair storm damage while lights are coming back on with some in the region others are bracing for days without electricity. nobody when the power will come back on. you have to wait and see. mik

in long beach island, some boats are jumbled and stacked on top of each other at the dock. others that were swept away now litter the streets and woods that are nearby. it is not just the shore feeling sandy's effects in new jersey. hoboken, just across the hudson river from new york city, was hit hard by rising flood waters. wnbc is live with more on the damage. >> reporter: good morning. we are live here in hoboken, and the devastating flooding is definitely taking the city by storm. nearly two feet of flooding taking place op this street going down as far as the eyes can see. cars are under water, and people are still stranded in their homes and apartments. i had an opportunity to speak with the police department here in hoboken, and they were trying desperately to save theese people. also, the military, the national guard has come in, using their special military cars to come in with the flooding. what's so special about the cars, they have the engine on top which prevents them from shutting down dung high water situation. the power shut down. we had to be escorted to t
