you see that snow blowing around, looks at star wars along long island. is reduced visibility will blow the snow run, providence rhode island as a blizzard morning until midnight and crews have been an ally from long island to rhode island removing the snow but replenishment coming down as fast as they removed. it is going to be a difficult day across the northeast is winds are gusting up to 33 miles hour. this storm is continuing to the carolinas. and went -- winter weather advisory is in effect raleigh north carolina until 9 am. carolinas have had a three weekends, brutal ice storm, snow, freezing temperatures, 32 degrees and light snow is falling. this is the morning to stay home, chill out, relax and unwind as the storm starts to wind up. this is going to be quite a historic storm. craig: it is good that today saturday, hopefully people don't have to work but some people will have to. cape cod is getting pounded this morning, how is handling the snow, will, how's it looking this morning? >> reporter: the snow is not a factor at the moment, it is the wi

several inches is hour on long island.ydrant nearly buried by the snowfall. officials across the northeast have said they prepared for the absolute worst. in nearby new york city, 2,000 salt plows and crews working around the clock. we could see up to 60-mile-an-hour wind gusts. something you could not ignore when you step outside. what it is doing when they come through. it is picking up light fluffy snow and blowing it around worsening visibility and travel conditions. another issue is the 60-mile-an-hour wind gusts which could bring down winds and power lines. the risk of the power outages. utility crews here, 900 at the ready, in long island alone. when power goes out in frigid temperatures, it can be dangerous. that is top of mind as the storm continues. we could see several more hours of conditions like this. pictures like this across the northeast. governors in several states declaring states of emergency in maryland, new york, new jersey. new jersey already seeing a foot of snow. similar numbers in maryland at 9inc

on long island, maybe another 3 inches. that's on top of the 14 or so and we're wait to go see if this storm in boston can make it into the top five all time to get there we have to get over 24 inches of snow. we'll wait and see how that all plays out. the snow totals are just starting to come in. the highest total so far, the jersey shore. smithville is the highest of anywhere. it's 16 inches of snow. river head is at 14. philadelphia at the airport picked up around 6. new york, central park, that was a 7:00 a.m. reading, so we're probably close to 7 inches by now in new york city. we'll wait and see what logan reports later in the day. these winds have been no joke, out in province town, we gusted near 80 miles per hour. and it looks like our data stopped. we lost power to it or the anemometer, the wind gauge busted. not a storm to be fooling around with in eastern new england. that's kind of what we expected the rest of the northeast, you kind of start to resume their day. >> yeah, absolutely, and everyone be careful on

the wind is still strong where i am in central long island. 16 inches of snow, and really the eastern half did see a whole lot of snow. let's look at the forecast graphics, and you do see, yeah, the heavier snow has lifted up into the boston area and even farther to the north, further up into maine, areas where you're still going to see a good amount of snowfall. really brunt is happening right now and will continue overnight. there are plenty of areas on the back side of this system that have cleared off, but it's leaving a whole lot of snowfall, and the wind is still whipping around me as i'm sure you can hear. new jersey got as much as 21 inches of snow in some of the higher areas. much like we saw in long island, meningty of spots getting close to 20 inches and and stretching really just snowfall totals as far down as atlantic city. a lot of snowfall, impressive snowfall totals and that, obviously, going to continue to move into maine overnight tonight. something we'll continue to track. jon, back to you. jon: all right. meteorologist adam

wendy gillette is in long island, new york, with more on this. wendy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this is some of the snow that's piled up here after people cleared the sidewalks in riverhead. a total of 15 inches of snow fell here. the snow has stopped in the northeast, but the dangerous winter weather has not ended. >> as long as we can take our cars out we're good. >> reporter: at least 12 inches of snow fell in nine states this past weekend. parts of massachusetts, rhode island, and new york got more than two feet. >> first i thought it was ridiculous when they were saying we had 20 inches of snow. after seeing this driveway, it's obviously i was wrong. >> reporter: the worst conditions were seen along the coast. at the height of the storm, nantucket streets were underwater. here on the east end of long island, new york, the primary concern isn't flooding, it's the bitter cold. >> the cleanup of the storm will not be easy because of the temperatures that we have now. the goal is to have things ready for the morning co

long island. not just because of the snow totals, but because of the winds, gusts of up to 60 miles per hour became an issue throughout this storm, as it moved snow on to the roadways, making it not only hard to see for drivers, but hard to plow, because the snow just kept being pushed on to the roadways. new york governor kathy hochul said that the epicenter of the storm was long island. and in fact, it was declared that a blizzard moved through here on long island, with 35-mile-per-hour winds and visibility of less than a quarter of a mile. all of that going on for at least three hours. this was a storm that also impacted transportation, major airports in new jersey and new york. i'm talking about laguardia, jfk, and newark said that major airlines canceled a majority of their flights. as for snow accumulations, we're hearing that the estimates are anywhere from 18 inches on the western portion of long island to more than 2 feet, possibly, on the eastern end of long island. the next pbig worry,

already more than a foot in parts of long island.e were speaking with people who are managing to come out. some trying to dig out their cars. certainly a steep task at hand. one first responder who had to drive to get to work, we were just hearing about how difficult and treacherous the roadway conditions are. she said the number one most greatest obstacle was the visibility, and that's because these wind gusts were picking up the snow and it's coming down at an impressive rate, 2 inches in parts of new york. in nearby connecticut, that number is up to 3 inches. here's the governor in the last hour. take a listen. >> no tractor-trailers, we shut that down at 3:00 this morning. that was the right thing to do. rail is down. airport is down at this point. but i've got to urge each and every one of you, stay off the roads like you heard susan say. right now, the snow is accumulating, especially in eastern connecticut where it's falling heavier and, you know, 3 inches an hour. snow plows can't come around fast enough to get that cleared.

let's go from there now to long island, new york, and emily. emily, again, feeling badly, but what's the latest there for you? >> reporter: well, already, this bomb cyclone, a storm for the record books. atlantic city, new jersey, recording its snowiest january on record. we'll likely see other areas follow suit. we are here in long island, new york, which has already seen a foot of snow. we're going to see that snowfall total continue to rise. i'm really trudging through here because of how deep the snow is, and it's this light, fluffy stuff. take a look at the consistency here, which allows the wind and we're seeing some significant gusts for sure, pick it up, blow it around and really reduce the low visibility. that's why you will hear forecasters and experts warn people, if you don't have to go outside today, stay home, because the travel conditions are just absolutely treacherous. it's impacting trains. it's impacting the roadways, clearly. it's also impacting flights. nearly all flights canceled at a lot of new york area airports, so this

two feet on long island. canceled so far across the city. stranding, of course, tens of thousands of travelers as they wait out the storm, now classified, by the way, as a bomb cyclone. and nbc's ellison bar we are is in brooklyn, new york, out in the bomb cyclone. you're in my hood, my friend. it's not great out there. it's fun if you can get a sled and get pulled around the streets of new york city as we do, but nonetheless, it's windy, it's cold. >> reporter: yeah, it is, and look, i want to show you, there are snowplows already coming through this area. we've started to see a little bit of cleaning efforts get under way, more and more people braving the elements, family sledding walked right by us but when the wind picks up, you notice the warnings the mayor, the governor has been giving. this is powdery snow so at different times when the wind picks up, you get this wall, a whiteout, where it becomes very difficult to see and that's why they've been encouraging new yorkers to stay off of the roads today,

it's what the concern is here on long island as we get into the evening hours.n nassau county, the western most county of long island, are warning residents to stay off the roads because of the strong winds. because of the reason of the snow drifts you just mentioned, making it treacherous to drive. not the mention the worry about winds impacting possible power outages. so they are warning people to stay off the roads. let the plows do their work. earlier today, the governor of new york, kathy hochul, said long was actually the epicenter of the storm and it was a blizzard that moved through here. meaning that 35 mile per hour winds were blowing and visibility was less than a quarter of a mile. all that happening for three hours at least. so this blizzard, as you heard, moving up the coast. the coast as we know it. as -- standing in at least a foot of snow. this is not plowed snow. this is a sidewalk in smithtown, a central part of suffolk county. it's expected that least 18 inches fell in the western most counties then on the east end, 2 feet or more of snow has

adam klotz joins us from long island. >> reporter: hey, gillian.iles to the east of manhattan we're under blizzard warnings still all the way until 7 p.m. 15 inches of snow on the ground where i'm currently standing, and you can tell these winds still really strong. even as the snow lightens just a little bit, it's such a light, dry snow that the wind's picking it up, drifting very easily so recovering roads that have been cleared and continues to really lower that visibility. now, if you're in this area, we are getting closer and closer to the back side of this, so let's dive right into the weather forecast. you really see the heart, the heaviest snow if has continued to drift up to the northeast and east, so now boston, stretching up into maine. spots where you're really getting very heavy snow as we speak. but on the back side of this, the temperatures have fallen 16 degrees in new york. if you run upstate, temperatures fall down into single digits for a lot of interior new england. this is your future forecast, we'll get you through today and y

that will be a concern for areas like long island up to coastal new england.a look at this record-breaking snow for the south over the weekend. the good news is, it's a monday. so people hopefully are staying off the roadways. still very icy and treacherous across areas that don't typically see over 10 inches of snow and ice. so we hope people heed all of the warnings and local officials to try to keep residents safe. but look at the storm. i mean, it is pretty wound up here are the worst of the winds across the tri-state area. the forecast 30 to 40 miles an hour for the new york area for the duration of time, long island 40, 50, 60 miles an hour and the water will start to pile up. unfortunately along coastal areas because of the flooding concerns. so i am concerned about the low lying areas on long island. look at the snowfall reports. over a foot of snow it arkansas, north carolina, that is really incredible. that is record-breaking snow. if there is a good side of this, and twitter, i asked for snow dog pictures because of the dog in the snow. it blew up m
