traditionally on long island especially in nassau county. if you went way back and i'm talking 30 40 50 years ago, there was a dominant republican political machine. you talk about in the big cities where democrats in the old days, that republicans had the biggest political machine in america. and in nassau county. that machine in the last couple of years has experience that come back. republicans won back in 2021, the office of county executives in nassau county. they won control of a county legislature. a county board of commissioners. a county legislature they got control of that. the red wave at multiple levels of the ballot in nassau county returning it to the old days of republican dominance. and i think republicans not because of what was happening at that level, and what had happened in 2022, they could just switch it. as you can see, they expelled from the house, put a new candidate in, and there would be a strong political tie. a very strong republican apparatus to power that candidate. as you can see here, it swung back. 16 points

let's hear it for long island! 80-20. for the people of long island and queens, they're sick and tired of the political bickering. they've had it. they want us to come together and solve problems, so now we have to carry the message of this campaign to the united states congress and across our entire country. it's time -- it's time to move beyond the petty partisan bickering and the finger pointing. it's time to focus on how to solve the problems. it's time to get to work on immigration, on israel, on combating putin, on helping the middle class. and by getting the state and local tax deduction back. let's send a message to our friends running the congress these days stop running around for trump and start running the country. it's time to find common ground and start delivering to the people of the united states of america. the people are watching. they want us to start working together. so the message is very clear. either get onboard or get out of the way. >> to the people in this room and to our friends throughout thi

so this was long island, new york. it was one of the big exceptions in the 2022 midterms to what was otherwise a pretty strong night for democrats. as we say, it may have cost the democrats a shot it actually retaining control of the representatives. so i think it made the race more significant. this was the place where the red wave did hit in 2022. the red wave hit these congressional elections. if anything there have been red waves and local elections in nassau county and long island for a long-time. the democrats had won it in 20 -- the republicans won that back in 2021. there's a county legislature and county commissioners, republicans have gain control of so there's a trend in nasa and law long island been trending toward republicans heavily toward republicans. so democrats, to be able to go in that district, a district that had flipped to republicans in 22, an area that has been trending republican, a district that may have cost them a shot at controlling the house of the 22 midterms, to go in there and to win it

i mean long island? that's a centrist place. >> yeah, atbut i don't know if has to be about ideology as much as it can be about the contrast and governing or lack of. this arguments about rejecting the bipartisan immigration deal that the republicans did, or impeaching mayorkas without a plan. in many ways, americas trial can help democrats. because this is one of the very few times that democrats have turned the tables on republicans on this issue of immigration. staff, you asked about my special election ten years ago, and there is an anecdote that is very telling from where we are right now. i came through the primary, the republican primary in that special election. and we were broke after winning the primary. no money for the general. the democrats have cleared the field, the candidate had all the money the day after the primary, and we did not know to do. and my consultant, one of the best in the game said, we are going up with an analog immigration. we have no polling on it but it works, immigrati

this was sort of, nassau county, long island, the other congressional districts on long island.e, in the 2022 midterms, the right-wing, red wave hit here. it in the third district, fourth district, across long island. what happened in 2022 is republicans going into the election that would happen in suburban type districts around the country. it happened in a few odom, of them and it happened in long island. it did not happen anywhere else. the significance for democrats here of a sea is we know in general that they are gaining strength over the last generation in the suburbs, in places with high concentrations of professional class voters, voters with college degrees. democrats have been a poor court democratic constituency. they are doing well around the country, but here, this is where they lost grounds with those voters, significant ground in 2022. they can say tonight in a special election, that they won it all, back at least in terms of the outcome here, getting it back to democrat plus eight that's what the final result looks, like somewhere around there. it raises a preca

also, nassau county long island.4 points and then they elected a republican in 2022. there are also two other districts in eastern long island that will republican held that were thought to be competitive republicans ended up winning them very comfortably. all four of these long island districts and it up going republican. democrats that they have a shot at all of them. then you had in there were two other districts in new york state, one where sean patrick maloney, who is the shoe chair of the democratic congressional campaign committee, the national committee that organizes the house democratic campaign effort, he lost his own district. democrats never saw that coming. and there is one more seat in the syracuse area. republican, hildebran publican was not running again. the democrats thought they could pick it up and they lost their. although seats i just described, if the democrats had won five of those in 2022 they overperformed almost everywhere else nationally. they would have held the house of representatives

look at long island, it is all red. the four long island-basd districts, all republican. this was an eight-point biden district the third that republicans won in 2022, chekd check out this district, this district voted for biden in 2020 by 14 points. this was one of the big shockers of election night 2022. and these two districts here were already republican-controlled, democrats thought in '22 they had a shot, they got blown out in both, they lost both of these. long island and really kind of new york in a lot of areas was an exception in 2022 to the national story of a red wave that wasn't really materializing. it absolutely did all along long island island and other parts of new york. that's what makes this a little bit more interesting too. the trend in 2022 and local races in nassau county in particular, in the last couple of years, has been toward republicans and against democrats. against that backdrop for a democrat to win by eight points in a special election is noteworthy. >> indeed it is. what does this outcome mean for republicans in the house? >> reporter: it

this is long island over here, and then basically this is the line that separates long island from newk city. there's a portion of the district that is in new york city. it's actually in queens, and it's the outer part of the borough of queens. this makes up about 18% of the vote, and the last election of the vote was 18% of the vote and that came from the queens portion, and the rest came from nassau county, and that's a big suburban county on long island. this is a district, and there are not many in the country that voted for joe biden in 2020, and biden carried this district over donald trump by eight points. in the mid-term election in 2022, this was an open seat, and suozzi who used to sit in it, was running for governor. santos came in and ran by eight points, and so a 16-point swing there, and a big part of the republican success in the district in 2022 and all of long island in 2022 and a lot of the new york city suburbs, it was a reaction, it seems, to new york city, to democratic control, crime, quality of life and those sorts of things, and what republicans are running on,

then you get into long island. nassau county. this is just classic commuter, densely populated suburbs, developments and all this. so this district, this suburban district here in 2020 voted for joe biden. biden carried this district in 2020 by eight points. then in the 2022 midterm elections, that's when george santos got elected. this is an open seat in 2022 and santos actually won this district that biden had won by eight points. so it went from democratic plus eight to republican place eight in 2022. this was the story all across long island in 2022. one of the reasons democrats had a good night in '22 and almost kept the majority but didn't quite get there was because they didn't make the gains they were expecting on long island. so what we're seeing in this race is republicans pressing many of the themes that worked for them in 2022 where they, crime, quality of life issues, a lot of stories from new york city, worrying voters in the suburbs. republicans are now adding to that the migrant crisis, the border, immigration. tr

it did across long island in 2022, and it did in a few other parts of new york in 2022. so this district you could see suozzi winning by eight last night. in 2022, it was george santos, the republican who won this by eight, but if you went back to the 2020 presidential election, joe biden versus donald trump, biden had won this district by eight. so that was the big question heading into last night. was this result going to be like 2022 in the midterms or was it going to be more like that presidential election result from 2020. and republicans were very optimistic because not only had they done well in the 22 midterms on long island, they'd also been doing very well in local races and in county races. republicans, you know, once upon a time had one of the most feared machines in the country in nassau county a suburban political machine. that machine has regained a lot of its power in the last few years. republicans won back the county executive's office. they won back the county legislature that they have here. they won control of that, so republicans felt that there was

this district is mostly on long island. this is nassau county, enormous county, new york suburbs on long island and touch of the district that's in new york city. it's the far edges of the queens. it's a part of queens that is kind of little more suburban in nature. this really is a classic suburban district. the vast majority of the vote coming out of the nassau county portion of the district. here it's significant. tom suozzi, you can see won nassau by a five-point margin. when republicans won this seat. when george santos won this seat in 2022, santos won nassau county by 10 points. nassau county also -- there's been a lot of red waves happening in nassau county other the last couple years. republicans locally won the county executive office back in 2021. they won control of the county legislature. a lot of counties are run boards of commissioners. long island they have a county legislature. republicans have control of that. nassau county and long island itself in the suburbs to the east of new york city, in 2022, that's

i went to long island to spend time with both candidates.e is my conversation with tom suozzi, who held the seat for 2 terms, it had an unsuccessful run for new york governor. >> why do you want to go back to congress?>> i feel like i have a unique set of skills that could help during this difficult time. i think the biggest problem we are facing in the country, in addition to all the issues like immigration and state and local tax deduction is the country is so divided. i focused a lot of my career, not just in congress, but before that, working across party lines to get that done. i built a lot of relationships. >> i don't know if you have notice, but since you have left -- >> it's not my fault. >> even working across party lines -- >> it is tough. >> what happened with the immigration bill? >> to me, that is the most heartbreaking thing. in my race specifically, my opponent says she's concerned about the border. we are all concerned about the border, but she's not solving the border problem because she won't support the bipartisan border

long island portion. it's gonna be about 80% vote is gonna come out of the nassau county classic suburbia, a lot of new york commuters here, bedroom communities. the other 20% or so is going to come from the new york city portion of the district, the far edges of queens. kind of suburban queens, if you will. that sort of the composition of the district here. you take a look, you are mentioning that voting history in 2022, this was the santos victory over the democrat. it was about a seven-point victory, seven and a half point victory, and under the same lines, these were redrawn lines, as you mentioned, after 2020, after these same lines, biden would have won this district by eight points. so you have a burden eight margin under these lines to a santos was seven and a half margin. that was a swing between 2020 and 2022. what changed redistricting was this portion of the district's new. it's more blue collar. it's like massapequa. levittown is down on the bottom, southern portion of the district. it's more

i don't think the long island suburbs are longing for a full maga candidate. is that it does seem like the polls had it as very tight, and it was not a very tight race. santos, i mean it was called at 10:00. >> suozzi won by 8 i believe. democrats took a bit of a victory lap saying, look, we keep winning despite all doubts. twrou write about this is going to be the anxiety election. and polls suggest americans not really happy with their choice. there's a sense of dread how long ugly this campaign is going to be. there's particular anxiety in the prospects of another trump term. >> yeah, look, trump is not -- yesterday there was news of a deportation force that would go to blue states to take people out and do ideological tests about whether or not to deport them. this dystopian stuff, right? this country wasn't built on ideological tests. i think it's quite scary, but i do they think that i mean if we're going to get anything from the suozzi election, right, is these polls have been kind of off. so maybe democrats don't need to be as anxious as they've been.

that area is pretty red, the blue area is a different part of long island? >> steve: biden won in 2020. >> brian: tom suozzi was a businessman and blakeman was the executive now in nassau county. each election is a battle. you have been out there. >> lawrence: you highlight the demographics of what is going on there and the issues driving peep toll go to the polls is the border and crime. and that is why we're here in memphis thchl is an opportunity for that area to send a message to washington they will not take it anymore. we had a local pastor on, we will play the sound later on. the solution is simple, we make this complicated. we need das that apply the law and go after criminals and prosecute them. we need judges that sign warrants and we need cops to kick in the doors and arrest criminals so they can stop influencing our children that commit the crimes. >> steve: you refer to ricky floyd, we have that sound bites, he's talking about how it is time to get tough. do you think it is time to turn the heat up when it comes to criminals on the street? >> i

now the tom suozzi won out in long island. he dismissed it as either insignificant or representative of democratic weakness. how accurate? >> well, look, i mean, this was a district where if you look at suburban districts really north of the mason-dixon line, where are the terrain is probably it's difficult for democrats anywhere because their best issue, abortion probably isn't as salient given the democratic control over the state party as state government, people aren't just concerned about that. and on the other hand, you have the concentration of the migrant and crime issue in new york city that is broadcast intensely by the new york city media. and yet democrats won again, and they one in a way that was very reminiscent of what we saw in 2022 and the elections of 2023, where tom suozzi self said that joe biden was underwater in the district, and yet, as we saw in those earlier elections, a substantial slice of voters who are dissatisfied with biden's still were unwilling to vote for republicans. and i do think that suozz

but you decided to win that seat on long island's, you were going to support tom suozzi. personally, what was that like for you personally? because floaters are going to go through experiences like this in november, where they are angry with the president about the situation in gaza, or something else, and yet they are very strong pro-choice of voters, and the only choice they have to express that on the ballot is e joe biden. but they've s got that difficulty. so if i'm angry at him for something, i am sure that there were nights in your life, where you were very angry at thomas suozzi, when he was running against you. and then the day came when you had to make a decision about what is best for government, and what is best for this country, in that congressional seat. what is that, what does that feel like to go through that at type of decision? >> as somebody who believes in our democratic institutions, who loves this country to my core, i knew that the most important thing i could do was to set aside personal feelings, which l are real. we are h human beings, we are n

i want to get straight to athena jones, who is at a polling place in glen cove's on long island. athena, what are you seeing so far? >> hi dana what. we've been to, to polling places today we started out at a middle school nearby early in the morning for about six to eight, there were a few voters trickling and you can see now we're at a boy's, the boys and girls club of glencoe. >> it's >> pretty empty in here and i will talk to several of the election workers here one has been at it for eight years. one's been added for about a dozen dozen years and both of them said this is the dentist. they've seen it in a long time and they attribute it to number one, this being a special election to the fact that it's snowing and it's knowing heavily outside schools are closed, maybe a lot of parents aren't commuting into work. they're not voting as they head to the train station to head into the city maybe there'll be coming around as we get later in the day. hey and they also said that the early voting was pretty strong, more than 8,000 people cast votes early. more of those early votes w
