it happened on long island city. eyewitness news reporter jim dolan at the scene talking with the girl and her family. >> in those moments after her 8-year-old daughter was mauled by a dog, she thought her daughter's ear was gone. there was blood everywhere and it was impossible to see how much damage had been done. the daughter is doing a lot better now, but there are still so many important unanswered questions. >> reporter: 8-year-old catherine still has scars from the 60 stitches doctors used to close her wounds back in august. she still needs more surgery but she can run and play with her brother now. >> they ask permission to pet the dog. >> reporter: pictures from that day are too graphic to show without blurring out the most badly injured parts of catherine's face. 40 stitches her mother thought catherine might lose her right ear as well after a pit bull lab mix snapped. >> the dog mauled her in the face and the temple. , that's the biggest problem area, we are going to have minor flooding western long island sound, long island, new york city over the next 24 to 48 hours and we have a lot of wind along the coast. high wind watches where winds can go up to 50 miles an hour. so again the coastal impact will be the headline after this rain gets lighter later tonight. 50-mile-per-hour gusts at the coast, six to 10-foot waves potentially some major coastal flooding on the jersey shore that can cause some minor to moderate property damage and again this is not just tonight, it's tomorrow, it's into sunday as well. you can see the steady rainfall, it's almost right over i-95, central new jersey into new york city and long island, rain is a little lighter but steady off to the north and west. you're not seeing a lot of yellows so i don't think we are talking major street flooding. you're just talking a lot of ponding and all that rainfall you see offshore, that pinwheels through through the day tomorrow -- or through the night and then it gets lighter tomorrow. the fire hose of rainfall is headed into the carolinas and that's beca

we saw more in way of sunshine like new york city, and long island, and central and southern new jersey with more clouds, they are moving northward, we'll go partly to mostly cloudy through overnight hours. no rain is in our forecast. today's highs with sunshine to 60s. across much of the tri-state area. 60 readings out toward long island. we saw more in the way of sunshine, right now we're down to about 57 in the park, 55 in islip, bridgeport 53, north and west readings in 40s like poughkeepsie, and monticello, they are a few degrees milder at this time than they were last night be we have a brisk northeast wind, coming in 10 to 15 miles per hour, that northeast wind direction is problematic along our shore points, making it feel like 40s north and west of city, hurricane joaquin is offshore, not affecting the u.s., we have that storm system to the south, but with that northeast wind coming in we have a high surf advisory for south shower of tomorrow. be aware that wave heights can be pretty high, that is something to be of concern in the afternoon. i'll have more what we can expect th
