we're in longmont colorado. this river runs through the middle of this town and today in town is virtually cut off. most of this cilt activity going on in the foothills in towns like lyons and james town. the only way to get into those towns will be by helicopter. that's what the sheriffs department is using to get these people out. joe pelley sheriff said they can't use the roadways, he says the roadways at this point no longer exist. they have virtually been washed out. so it's going to be a long time for this cleanup. again 218 people still missing here this morning. that number up from about 80 yesterday. so that number is shocking. as we come back here to longmont the river is rising here. this town virtually cut off and as we said with the forecast for more rain tonight, people here and officials are very concerned about what could happen here. again, over the next 24 hours. richelle. >> and when you think about that jim, as you think about these people that are isolated, these towns that are isolateyou st

we have the latest now live in longmont, colorado. >> i'm actually in an area that is not an a flood plain so the folks in this neighborhood don't have flood insurance. but take a look at what happened here. there's the front door. the folks who live in this home have been here for 20 years and just below the foundation was washed out underneath last week when the floodwaters came through this entire area. and you see that boat back there? that actually was right over here, in this area, and it was pushed back there along with two vehicles at the same time. when all of this was covered about water and destroyed this entire area. now, take a look over in this area right here where the cleanup is taking place through this entire region. most of the streets that we've driven through in longmont look like this. places that have been hit and now you have recovery crews going through the houses, and emptying them out and then what they have to do is get in there and disinfect it. because this mud that you see on everything that's dried, it has sewage in it, it has chemicals in it. it's act

rob reynolds, al jazeera longmont, colorado. >>> mexico is having its own flooding problems as two powerful storms slammed into that country. more than 30 lost their lives and tens of thousands have been evacuated. david mers reports. >> while there have been scenes of devastation across mexico, as much as two inches of rain have fallen on the pacific and atlantic gulf coast, there have been massive massive flooding, two inches of water in some areas, there have been mudslides, one bus was covered by a mudslide leaving 12 people dead. they said over two-thirds of the country have been affected by these storms, by these torrential rains. a state of emergency has been declared on one of the states along the pacific coast. there are still people who are trapped in small villages in the mountainous areas of the pacific coast. they are waiting for help to reach them but more than a dozen roads or bridges being damaged or completely washed out, the emergency services are having great difficulty reach these people, as water and food start to run out. so there are a lot of hurdles for these emergen

our nick valencia is there in colorado outside of boulder, in a town called longmont. nick, this has been a really difficult couple of days for the folks there in longmont. have things gotten worse, or is there any improvement in the conditions? >> reporter: well, if you judge it by their anxiety, it has not faded. we have heard some good news this morning, but this river that i'm standing next to, it doesn't show that really. this is a creek on a normal day you could walk across this, victor and christi. the good news is the water was a lot higher before. it had flooded out and washed out this road right to the side of me here. but longmont was extremely hard hit. and we have some incredible video to show you that was posted just a little while ago of the longmont fire department on a search and rescue mission yesterday through downtown. it gives you a sense of the scope of the damage and the force of the floodwaters as they made their way through this community. more than 7,000 people -- i should say, at least 7,000 people evacuated from this area, 2,000 still withou

. >> incredible close call there. 7,000 people have been rescued from longmont, colorado alone. cnn's george howell is there. paint a picture for us, what's happening there? >> reporter: fred, let's look at this because this really kind of tells the story. this path, this tunnel that you see a low clearance of 8 feet. look how high the water is there. this could be possibly 6 feet. let's listen to see if we can tell, listen close. sounds pretty deep. you get a sense there's a lot of water rushing through. and pan also, look under that sidewalk, all of the mud scalloped out and sent down into this creek. and that's the problem. when you have flood waters out here, you have rocks, big rocks at times, tree branches, could cause a problem for cars that get caught in the currents. that's the issue, too. this is a good shot, too. when you see how powerful the water is, rushing downhill, that's what is cutting off so many different communities. in jamestown, at least 200 people are still waiting to be rescued. we know that this is something that could take time because you can't drive

jim in longmont colorado. thank you. we want to turn to rebecca 7son and talk about that threat of rain this weekend. >> that's true, tom. we've got two rounds that we are waiting for one, this afternoon coming with scattered showers and thunderstorms. they are widely scattered. a second round of rain is more likely it's going to have heavy rain within it, comes into our sunday. so, as we look at the area that's the biggest concern, it's a flooding area stretching not only in colorado but we are seeing this also impact utah with the river flooding and flash flood washes. you may here the 100-year term used quite a bit. to verify, this was a flood that had one out of every 100 times in one year that that could happen. so when he is saying one of in 500, that's probably 5 times the chance in that full year that it would happen or actually, a very small percentage. so there is quite a bit of rain coming down with these storms. very quickly we could at late with 1 to three inches within the stumbles we are seeing pom up this

reporter sunland miller is live in longmont, colorado.ds offer people are still waiting to be rescued is that correct? >> reporter: that's correct, pam. there are hundreds still waiting to be rescued and many that are unaccounted for here. today, the weather is a little bit better than it was over the weekend which is hopeful sign for some of those who are trying to aid in recovery effort. if you can look behind me, pam, this river is just raging. this is five times the width that the river normally is and that's what slowed those rescue efforts down yesterday. the rain was so heavy and there was a fierce cloud cover up in the air, so it really prevented from a lot of those rescuers to get into the areas where people are still stranded so today, the forecast is for scattered showers which is very hopeful sign for those rescuers that can get to those people still stranded. pam back to you. >> and sunland, we're just looking at the overhead shots from the air. this is supposed to be one of the largest aerial rescues since hurricane katrina.

in longmont, colorado, i'm torre dunam reporting. >> indra petersons is watching the forecast for atast a week now. i saw sunshine yesterday and i got so excited for those folks. >> definitely more sunshine on the way today. it's like a day in between here before storms come back to the area. we have broken record after record in the boulder area. they actually broke the record for the amount of rain in a day. so about over 9 inches of rain. the last time we saw that record broken was in 1919 and there it was only 4.8 inches. they pretty much doubled the highest amount of rainfall for one day a last thursday and broken the amount of rain in september and amount the rain so far in the year. unbelievable amount of record rainfall hitting the area. good news today, they are drying out. we are seeing a little bit more of a westerly wind so drier conditions expected. doesn't mean you can't see a stray shower here or there. after tomorrow, a cold front sliding in from the pacific northwest and with that we will enhance our rain chances wednesday night in through thursday and we should see

our reporter sunland miller live in longmont, colorado and says hundreds of people are still waiting to be rescued. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, dave. well the rescue efforts were really stalled yesterday by the bad weather. helicopter flights were grounded and the fierce rain really slowed down a lot of the ground searches so officials are hoping that today is their day to get in and find those who are still unaccounted for. in what could be the biggest helicopter rescue operation since hurricane katrina, rescue crews in colorado are trying to get to communities cutoff by raging floodwaters. the flooding has left at least six people dead. rain and clouds kept the helicopters grounded sunday, slowing search for hundreds still unaccounted for. officials say up to a thousand people are still waiting to be evacuated. >> we're still bracing. i mean there are many many homes that have been destroyed, number have been collapsed and we haven't been in them yet, so we're still dealing with that how do we save lives first. >> many families say they woke up to rivers rushing by the

anna werner is in longmont colorado. norah, and gayle. this creek behind me is normally a lot smaller but you can see how much water is here and how fast that water is moving. the impact of the strength of these flashflood floodwaters they can pick up these tree uproot them, and carry them downstream. the impact of those floodwaters, 19,000 homes damaged. the catastrophic flood zone in colorado is nearly the size of the state of connecticut. sunday the rain continued. more fell on boulder in the past few days than in the entire year before the storm. road closures have cut off hundreds of colorado residents from rescuers and airlift operations are in many cases the only way to reach them. one national guard spokesman says this is the largest air rescue operation since hurricane katrina. even officials are shaken by the magnitude of the tragedy. but they're confident colorado residents can recover. >> inch by inch mile by mile community by community, they're taking this stuff back. >> reporter: well, the skies are still c

our reporter is live in longmont, colorado, and says hundreds of people are still waiting to be rescued. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tori. first responders and a group of national guardsmen were trapped overnight while on a rescue mission. it certainly shows that there is a challenge here just getting to those unaccountable. rescue crews in colorado hope today they will be able to reach the hundreds left stranded by relentless rain and flash flooding. officials blame at least sick deaths on the weather -- six deaths on the weather. colorado's national guard has evacuated 2300 people. >> this is one that's really close to home. we're able to help our neighbors in the time of need. a lot of times these are literally our neighbors. >> reporter: among those rescued, a group stuns -- a group of students stranded near jamestown on a field trip. >> something just grabbed it out of the sky like a waterfall and put it there. >> we're gonna come back and rebuild better than it was before. >> reporter: emergency management officials say the floods have destroyed at least 1500 homes an

jeffrey saturn is the police commander in nearby longmont, colorado.nking at this point that the 170, the lion's share of those folks you guys just haven't been able to contact them? is that the thinking? >> longmont does not have that many. we have three unaccounted for. but it's the same theory. we believe they've gone somewhere and we just can't reach them at this point. >> how did your town fare during the floods? >> we had significant flooding that damaged many of our bridges in our city. right now, we have only been able to return three of the bridges out of about eight. it effectively cut our city in half. >> what at this point, sir, has been the most challenging part of dealing with this disaster? >> i think for us it was the split city, getting around in our community with our emergency personnel engineers. that's been the most challenging. we were split by the river and we had operations on both sides of that river. >> 700,000 folks evacuated there -- 7,000, excuse me. >> yes, we evacuated 7,000 homes. we have since returned all but about 1,5

colorado. returning to a devastated community. residents in longmonts for the first time since thursday no longer habitable. >> it's ruined. the basement is gone and it stinks so bad in there, you can barely stand it. >> reporter: jeff larson's wife, nina watched as their suv was swept away by rushing water. >> i watched it being swept down the road. our basement immediately started flooding. >> reporter: evacuated nine hours later, they consider themselves lucky. thick mud and water moved through lyons, shifting entire homes from their foundation. this woman unable to reach her home on the other side of the river. in utter disbelief it was picked up and moved several feet. >> today is our first day up here since we've been evacuated. and i feel like it's worse than i thought it would be. we lost absolutely everything we own. >> reporter: when you look at this entire story, the past five days that we've covered here on "new day," some 12,000 people were forced to evacuate because of the storm system. just in the last day we know of some 250 people who

. >> nick valencia joins us from longmont, colorado. good morning, nick. >> reporter: good morning, carol. the helicopters and rescue crews for the national guard will attempt to reach the hard to reach remote areas. fog could create visibility issues. yesterday the rescue cruise were temporarily grounded because of the rain that created the visibility issues and some of the same national guardsmen in lyons, just north of where we are in longmont, 15 of the 51 national guardsmen remain stranded because of high waters. they were able to get pets out and residents. earlier the mayor of boulder, colorado, spoke to cnn and talked about some of the issues the community is still facing. >> i think there's still going to be a lot of shock and disbelief the amount of destruction, the damage to people's houses, the damage to neighborhoods, the damage to roads, the damage to our much beloved open space. it's pretty significant and as i said, it's extraordinarily widespread. >> and some new information this morning, carol, new information this mor
