let's ask sarah longwell, who joins us now.e publisher of the bulwark and host of the focus group podcast. it's great to have you with us on the, show sarah longwell. i appreciate your time. you wrote in the bulwark that people who serve trump directly need to go on the record as loudly and as frequently as possible, about exactly why he should never get near the white house again. and a lot of these guys have gone on the record condemning their old boss and even writing books about it. talk about why you think former trump die hards need to be speaking out more now, and how did you come up with that idea? >> look, there's two things going. on one is just how unprecedented the number of former trump cabinet officials who have spoken out publicly against him -- just how many there are. that's never happened before. and one of the reasons i wanted to work on that new york times piece is to show the sheer volume in aggregate. because when you put it all together you realize just how many of them think he is a danger to democracy,

so, tell me where they are. >> in the piece, longwell, she pulls out specific names. put them on the screen. she writes the servicemen, like mike mark milley. the party loyalists, like betsy devos, the candidates, like mike pence, the don't know if betsy devos is in opposition to a donald trump reelection. >> mike pence? >> and mike pence is one of his senior aides, just want to go sign on and work for the trump campaign. and everybody knows nick air knows that that is, not surprised. this is just the conversation we had about oh, the candidates there was no competition in this primary. it wasn't a competition because they refuse to compete. >> exactly. >> what if all of the people that know better, the people who whisper privately, and it's not a risk for their lovely shouting,, please don't put me on the record. republicans, people who are for donald trump or in the administration that say, i think he's crazy and he should never be allowed back into the oval office. those people have to come out and speak out aggressively and often. >> they do. but they won't. and t

was like she had heard about it, so nobody else had even heard about it. >> joining me now sarah longwell, publisher of the bulwark. i think what you learned there is very telling to a lot ofulse who spend time worrying about these sorts of things and thinking, wow, this would be campaign ending to not say that the civil war was about slavery. it's a different game out there. the republican contest in iowa and the republican contest in general is a different game with different rules. >> yeah, no doubt. and, look, the fact is, first of all, doing focus groups all the time, one of the main things that i've learned is that voters are not paying nearly as much attention as those of us who spend all of our time thinking and talking about politics, but what's interesting -- i just did a group of iowa voters this week, and for them it's over. donald trump is the person. they aren't that interested in anybody else. i asked one of the voters in that group what's one thing, what could move you off donald trump, and she said he would have to do something really extreme like die or murder somebody.
