i think we owe a debt of gratitude to longwood university and to dr. coles and patrick schroder and you ought to give them all a round of applause. [ applause ] how many of you, and there are quite a few of you, have been to the mcclain house at appomattox courthouse? that makes things rather easy for me. it's time for lunch i believe. one thing that's probably not generally known is that the first offer of surrender didn't come from a letter from general grant. it came from a group of officers that have gathered april 7th and these officers concluded that because the circumstances facing the army that it might be best to suggest to general lee that he opened negotiations with general grant. they selected him as their spokesman. william nelson for episcopalian. he approached general lee that day. he would not hear that suggestion. he said there were too many brave and good men. general grant and most of the federal forces moved in. general lee moved the army of northern virginia north of the appomattox river. general grant establishes his headquarters

this talk was part of a symposium on the closing of the civil war cohosted by longwood university and appomattox court house national historical park. it is a little under an hour. [applause] >> thank you david. can everyone hear me ok? all right. we have watched the armies of grant and lee moving across the virginia landscape from the siege of petersburg to the surrender of appomattox courthouse. now i'm going to make a detour. we are going to make a sharp turn south and turn back the clock. we are going to go back to december of 1864. and we are going to follow this man, general william sherman and his progress in what he believes and hopes will be his final campaign of the war. sherman and grant are pursuing the grand strategy they formulated in march of 1864 in cincinnati ohio. 1864 in cincinnati, ohio. the idea was to keep the armies in the east and in the west -- the confederate armies, so busy they could not reinforce each other. and not have a repeat fiasco of the battle of chickamauga in 1860 three. this strategy is working slowly, but inexorably well grants -- while grant

he is now longwood university, he went here. you were one of the first male graduates, correct chris? chris, as you all know has had a long career with the national park service. he worked at appomattox and was chief of the interpretation at petersburg for many years. in 2008, he took over the position of mark manager battlefield creek park which is 15 minutes from here and really has been -- done an amazing job in revitalizing sailor's creek. he'll be available tomorrow for some tours out there if anybody is interested once our sessions end tomorrow. he's authored 12 books numerous articles. he is responsible for the latest retreat route where they have the pulloffs with the audio tapes you can listen to and has a booklet he did in relationship to that. he is actively involved in batterfield preservation and civil war sites particularly building up petersburg in the past getting a large amount of land for petersburg battlefield. receive an award of merit in 2014 for the leadership in history awards by the committee. and again,
