then we ran into sean loni from the exploratorium.began to point out these simple little items that are really fascinating. once he starts to explain what is going on. good morning, thank you for joining us. >> good morning. >> reporter: we're going to start with the pier piling -- >> that's right. >> reporter: so you already have this moving up. >> yes. the piling moved up out of the water. when we first started to do the research here about seven years ago now, we were noticing a lot of the ecology that lived around the pier, the in between the built environment and natural environment. we went in a boat and explored it. thought this is great. we can't bring people here. so we brought the piling up. we looked at this and studied it for a while. and we found as we started to study it, life lives in some very distinct zones, the amount of light animals get to live changes. if you look at this piling it's broken up into five disdidn't zones. the lowest -- distinct zones. the lowest part is this reddish growth here, happens down deep in
