the lonnie quinn of our new york station wcbs shows us the impact across the nation. lonnie, good morning. >> good morning to you, anthony. all this weather is related to the same system, it all depends on whether the air mass is cold or warm. you've got blues, pinks, greens. blue is the snow, pink is the ice, green is the rain, a little bit of everything. where does the system head from this point forward? the low pressure will push to the east, taking the moisture with it. is it snow, is it rain? you have to go to the northern portions to find big snowfall mountains and green mountains as well. winter weather advisories for a good portion of the northeast and for portions of the midwest. these have been expiring througugut the day today. they'll continue to do so. every little flash of green you see, we have river flood warnings in effect. when you see them this prevalent, across this portion of the united states, this is what we see in the springtime, yet we're finding it here in the end of december. heading out west, it's exactly opposite of what we've been seeing

chief weather caster lonnie quinn of our new york station wcbs shows us the impacts across the nation. good morning. >> good morning to you, anthony, every single weather story you showed us, every one of them related to the same weather system. take a look at why it's all because you got sleek, ice, rain, snow. the question is, where does it go from here? that's a current picture. you take a look at the computer modem. the low pressure responsible for this system will make a push to the east. basically, off to the east it goes, it drags the moisture with it. is it rain? is it snow? i will show you how it plays out. you get to the green mountain, that's where you find the biggest, six to 12 inches. maybe more as you get into maine, albany new york, you are in that darker slot. darker portions into the hudson valley, one to three inches. so is it the biggest snowstorm ever? no, certainly one of the biggest for the northeast. we have winter weather advisories in the northeast. we have them in effect for portions of the mid-west. look at these swatchs, little splashs of green. these are

vanessa murdoch is in for lonnie quinn tonight with more on the holiday weekend. vanessa, people enjoying the warm weather but a lot of people saying, where's the snow? >> i know. and listen, there's a slight chance of some snow early next week. but it's looking kind of abysmal but nonetheless cooler air tomorrow, then sunday we return to talking of record warmth. this is a crazy forecast. but it does have a mention of a little snow. so let's check in with our weather watchers. temperatures very mild today, we are in the 50s right now. it's 58 with plenty of clouds and rain falling, as well. so far .03" in queens. showers tonight in the forecast so that is not out of the picture. expect passing showers very rapidly passing showers at that. tompkins cove 56 degrees. calm winds. 4 miles per hour. live outside, show you this rather cloudy live picture. it looked stunning with the empire state building in red and green. right now a few showers moving through at 62 degrees. winds calm. so today's high another record setter, 66 degrees. warmest christmas day on record.

lonnie quinn is looking at winter weather headed our way. >> i see the balmy weather pushing back. this is interesting because it will be very short lived. right now, you are looking at central park. no skaters out. they will be out there pretty soon. the talk is about the weather. with the system out there, how is it gonna affect us? we have a partly cloudy sky right now as the clouds start to make their wray in. 40 degrees. pretty warm temperature right there. we are looking at -- i mean, a wintry mix for many folks. even new york city as this whole system starts off. overall are we talking rain or snow with the system. wintry mix to begin for most everybody out there. some snow is gonna be north of the area. i'm talking some snow, i believe it will be ice for -- ice for new york city. from the top of the united states to the gulf of mexico. top to bottom. the swirl around st. louis will be going north but it will drag this front through. it looks to be pretty good rain storm for many people out there but there will be the icing concern, again, north of new york city. by the time

. >>> let's talk to vanessa murdoch in for lonnie quinn. >> the rain is making its exit so skies won't be clearing per se but we'll be drying out a bit overnight. so certainly improvement in the forecast but we needed the rain today. most of us got about an inch and that is excellent news. at present damp and mild 59 in the city, east-northeast winds at 9 miles per hour. to give you a sense of 59 degrees the normal high today is 42. so we were well above that and for the months so far the average temperature of is 14.5 degrees above normal. in fact, it would be very challenging at this point for us not to set a new record for the warmest december on record. right now, it's held at 44.1 degrees as the average temperature so far this month. 52 degrees is the average temperature and while we have some very cold air that will be diving in for the weekend, next week is looking well above average again, with temperatures in the 60s around christmas day. christmas day could also be in the 60s. so this weekend seasonably cold air after that back to abnormally warm. on the vortex satellite and

. >> and lonnie quinn hopefully you're keeping that stuff away from us for a while. >> i don't see anything like that for our forecast. >>> right now, it's a light rain kind of foggy out there. but it's wet. it's not going to be icy not for anybody because the temperatures are just not going to be that cold. you're experiencing right now it's about 48 degrees, they may drop a degree or two but really the temperatures are going to stay put here overnighted. fog -- overnight. fog is getting thicker. so vibiana'sibility problems in the morning -- so visibility problems in the morning. where the snow on december 1? you have to go well north and even then, when you are talking about new hampshire and vermont, we are not talking a light fluffy snow. it's that wet sleet, rain mix. temperatures just really on the mild side for snow. if you zoom in tight in our area, it's light precipitation. it's breaking up in spots out there. but we did put some rain in the rain bucket. the biggest rain totals were down in ocean county, toms river with almost an inch. .84 over .75" right there. new york city .35.
