lord north was responsible. lord north in fact had inherited a revolutionary situation in america stop the day he became prime minister was the day of the boston massacre. for almost three years, he had been quite successful in diffusing the situation in america to the extent people were more worried about a war with spain than a revolution in america. parliament in 1772 didn't even discuss america. that's how far it had fallen below the radar. north was one of the first to recognize the colonies were indeed united and who for the rest of the war spent his time trying to backtrack. he became aware of just how intense the feeling was in all of the colonies in december 1774. that's when the british government heard the deliberations for the first continental congress. from that from that moment, he either secretly or publicly would try to bring forward terms and the first attempt was to negotiate with benjamin franklin and february of 1775, he offered consort tory proposals which would allow the colonies to tax th

lord cornwallis -- lord cornwallis was his junior, which often gets forgotten. at the home government increasingly communicated directly with cornwallis. he became essentially his own commander. cornwallis after clinton had taken charleston which was a heights, taking the largest city in the south. cornwallis won it to reclaim the south. of course we know that he ended up with yorktown. but of all of the personalities in this book, and he went on to enjoy the most successful postwar career. he was later to play a role in putting down the great irish rebellion of 1798, and he worked twice for some governor, a general of india, and he would die on a second trip to india. there are at least two to modern monuments along the river ganges dedicated to cornwallis. ironically he played a role in expanding the british presence especially in the south where he led armies that were as large as anything he led here in north america, and part of the argument of this book is these were indeed people who were responsible in some cases for expanding the british empire elsewher
