dave, lori, back to you. lori: steve harrigan.ev to the white house let's go to peter barnes. peter, the latest? >> hey, lori. wall street and investors are following every word out of the white house on the situation in the ukraine as well as the israeli invasion into gaza. they are worried about sanctions on russia and escalation of these conflicts. the president met this afternoon with his two point men on russian sanctions, treasury secretary jack lew and secretary of state john kerry and in the white house briefing room the president made clear he blames russia for creating at least the conditions for the downing of flight 17 by continuing military support for russian separatists. he warned he will approve more sanctions on russia but would not stop but with care so the u.s. does not endanger the global economic recovery. >> russia is a large economy. there is a lot of financial flows between russia and the rest of the world, but we feel confident at this point the sanctions that put in place are imposing a cost on russia the

"america tonight"'s lori jane gliha reporting from netherlands. thank you.ow to the very latest in gaza. after a bloody weekend in which several israeli soldiers and hundreds of palestinians were killed, intense shelling continues in eastern gaza strip. today an attack on a hospital left five dead. it is the third such attack on the hospital in this latest round of violence. international efforts for a ceasefire have stepped up as that humanitarian crisis continues to expand. nearly two weeks of israeli bombardment by land, air and sea have killed at least 551 palestinians and injured 3300 others. the majority of them are civilians. the israeli army says that 25 soldiers have been killed, two of the soldiers killed in the fighting over the weekend were born in america. and closer to 100,000 palestinians have now been displaced by the fighting. they're being sheltered in u.n. schools all across the gaza strip. tonight we have team coverage. let's begin with nicole johnston. you have discovered some of these safe zones simply are not so safe in reality. >> tha

how so, lori? >> well, as you mentioned, gretchen, we are the first organization that became aware that the government was dealing with applicants for tax exempt status in a way that seemed to violate the constitution frankly. because we found out back in july of 2010 and filed our lawsuit in august of 2010, with the filing of that lawsuit, the government was under an obligation to retain all possible information, documents, e-mails, et cetera, that might give rise to admissible evidence in our case. therefore, the government, the irs specifically was under an obligation to have what's called a litigation hold. they had to retain any information about how the irs was processing applicants for tax exempt status and so when everyone learned that lois lerner's e-mails were lost as were six other members of the irs in her circle, they were already under an obligation to hold that stuff. they could not have been recycled to servers. >> that's what's so alarming and startling about your case is not a lot
