and lori garrett is back with us tonight. we'll get her reaction to the testimony we heard from members of the trump coronavirus task force in that senate hearing today. tonight, donald trump is a man alone. the republican senate, who stood by president trump in his impeachment trial, are not standing by him in his trial by a public jury during the coronavirus pandemic. and that means that dr. anthony fauci was able to speak publicly today about the pandemic, without donald trump over his shoulder disagreeing with him. in testimony to the senate health education labor and pensions committee, when dr. fauci discussed his expectation that there will be a second wave of coronavirus in the united states, donald trump was not there to grab the microphone after him and say, i don't think that will happen. when dr. fauci said that it was not extremely likely but just more likely than not that we will have a vaccine within a year or two, donald trump was not there to offer his scientific opinion that we will get a vaccine much sooner

and i spoir to lori garrett last night on the program, journalist. and she's been warning epidemic like this for decades. she said her best-case scenario is 36 months and that was a best-case scenario involving a lot of things going right in terms of the search for a vaccine and social distancing. how long a timeframe are you looking at? >> we've heard from dr. fauci that 12 to 18 amongs is the timeframe that the administration is considering for a vaccine. that is faster than you would normally expect a vaccine. but we've never had so much motivation before. and, by that, i mean we never have faced such a crisis that required us to call on all of our resources. and so i think 12 to 18 months is the number we should keep in mind. that being said, i don't think we're all going to have to stay home for 12 to 18 months. i think there will be a period where we are able to shift from everyone having to stay home to slow the spread into these case-based interventions, quarantine you hear so much about. how our lives look over the next 12 to 18 months, it w

lori garrett, the pulitzer prize winning science journalist who helped sound the alarm on this crisis almost before anyone else, she said this online in terms of these new projections in terms of helping our lay folk understand what this all means. she says quote, new infection rates will soar in may and june, the new case projections put great increases across the prairie states, from the dakotas, down to the deep south. much of the u.s. covid-19 crisis will shift from new york, new jersey, california, washington, urban centers, to rural counties. quote, it's quite striking how closely the cdc's projections for increased covid cases mirror the locations of america's meat packing industry, which is currently slammed by covid spread. the new cdc forecast also shows surges ahead in areas that have reported covid outbreaks in nursing homes. quote, it seems that prior reckons, grossly underestimated the scale of focused outbreaks in meat packing, assisted living centers, prisons and the likelihood of community covid spread from these facilities. yes. that is what it seems like to me, too.

joining us now, nbc news science contributor lori garrett. good morning. been a good barometer for us over the course of this. snapshot of where we are now as we sit here in mid may a couple of months into this staying at home. how are we doing? what do we need to do better? you can't give a response for the nation because we don't have a anti-covid reaction overall. it's out to the states and localities so the answer how are we doing depends on where you are physically. >> so what about the hotspots like new york city for example where hospitalizations are down. we talked to a hospital saying where we are today is much better and all the things that we focused on hospitalization cases and ppe. so there can be the false sense of security that since new york has gotten better than where it was in a terrible place that the country is getting better. and considerably and i heard nothing but sirens 24/7, around the clock. sometimes 5, 6, 7 sirens at once and you can see and feel the sense of danger and death in the city. and that has dramatically changed. but
