. >> fox5 is in loudon county tonight. the sheriff's office there is investigating why a group of middle school students got sick last week. early reports indicate they shared a drink that may have been spiked with a prescription drug. fox5's teisha lewis is live outside river bend middle sterling in sterling with the latest. >>reporter: what's most shocking about this story is the age of those involved. we're talking about eighth graders, 12 and 13 years old here at river bend middle school. police say that it happened on friday morning. students in a classroom shared a xanax concoction. ultimately they were all sent to the nurse and at the end of the day they were all sent home with a parent likely in big trouble. the loudon countyives of's is investigating the incident. they're also working with the school resource officers here at river bend to find out more about what each student nu about the drug filled drink. unlike some previous cases, in this case thankfully the students did not need to go to the hospital. >> i t

. >> new tonight, the loudon county shear i's held a meeting with parents after news that several middle and high school students may have been high on xanax during school hours. fox5's lauren demarco joining us live with more on that and the dangers of companion as well. >>reporter: seven students at river bend middle school are suspected drinking with beanch laced with xanax on friday and at the same time two students at nearby potomac falls high school are suspected of having xanax on taking it as well. xanax is a prescription drug, but if abused, somebody can overdose and even die on it. there are other serious side effects, according to wall. there are the risks of breathing very slowly, so slow at levels that can become very dangerous. also seizures are possible and withdrawal. believe it or not, dependency develops very quickly and then if abruptly stops a person can experience anxiety and also mood swings. now, at tonight's meeting sheriff mike chap man highlighted the daings of drug abuse. it's possible the high school students may have replied the middle students with the drug.
