right now there is no containment firefighters say and that low humidity and 30- mile an hour winds are making firefighting efforts there very difficult. >> time now to ask meteorologist the question -- our meteorologist the question we've all been wondering, when is it going to end? >> we're getting closer but still a few rain clouds to contend with in the bay area. right now on my stormtracker 2 this is the loop moving from north av it moved from the south and -- after it moved from the south to the north. right now the heavier cells are closer to right around just to the north of concord around benicia and martinez. latest imagery, this is moving north and the heaviest cells at least in this sector from vallejo to benicia to martinez. those yellow cells do correspond to heavier downpour. that will be a factor at least in the short term over the next two to three hours, but the rest of the bay area seeing quite a bit of a break with a few spotty showers but for the most part partly to mostly cloudy skies. rainfall totals over the past 24 hours, very impressive. you can see the numbers

the fire in the white mountains near the mexico border is being fueled by strong winds and low humidity. over 40,000 acres have burned. firefighters are also battling three other fires across the state. >>> u.s. health officials are concerned about a major e. coli outbreak in europe. it's a strain of bacteria scientists have never seen before, and it's deadly. infections linked to contaminated vegetables have spread from northern germany to at least ten european countries. all of this in less than a month. more than 1,600 people have been infected. at least 17 have died. three americans recently back from germany suffered kidney failure, and that's because of that bacteria potentially. dr. jon lapook has more. >> reporter: experts suspect this deadly e. coli strain comes from contaminated fresh vegetables but officials are unable to pinpoint the source of what they're calling supertoxic bacteria. >> the thing that's striking is how quickly it has spread and it makes public health officials very concerned that we haven't seen the peak yet. >> reporter: stephanie lucas' two cons have been

it is rough conditions there, same story, low humidity. at the same point, strong winds, and what they could use is rainfall, what's been unfortunate, farther north in atlanta, we had decent rainfall the last couple days, no such luck for parts of south georgia. let's show you what else is happening. we have tornado warnings in portions of the midwest. severe thunderstorm watch indicated by this box here. as we zoom in west of st. louis, near st. charles county on i-70, a couple of tornado warnings popped up. no visual confirmation, just rotation has been detected by doppler radar. they are keeping a sharp eye on this. this is moving eastward on parts of i-70, possibly right through st. charles, confluence of the missouri and minneapolis rivers. could be moving through st. louis in 30 to 45 minutes. meanwhile, seeing the possibility of storms in parts of the central plains, upper midwest and into the ohio valley. as we mentioned with tj moments ago, the fire threat exists towards parts of the four corners. as we wrap up things quickly, tem

we had high winds, high temperatures, and low humidity.made for a dangerous combination for firefighters on the front line. today we've had a turn in the tables. the weather has lightened up, although it's breezy here now. for the most part, the breeze was down, winds were only at about ten miles per hour. that's a 50 mile-per-hour drop compared to yesterday. that meant firefighters could battle the blazes not only on the ground but back in the air. dc-10 air tankers were making fire retardant drops as well as helicopters. as a matter of fact, smoke plumes have gotten lighter over the last hour. at the monument fire, it's roughly 27% contained. some 27,000 acres are charred. and a few hundred miles north wherever we're standing, the wallow fire, the largest fire in arizona history which has been burning for three weeks, that fire is 81% contained. some nearly 800 miles of -- square miles have been charred. that's roughly the size of the city of jacksonville, florida. that's gone up in smoke. firefighters say they are struggling in some are

critical conditions, low humidity, strong winds around the area of low pressure.n terms of the dry conditions and red flag warnings and watches. they extend through seven states at this point and now back up through kansas and as far south as parts of texas along the rio grande valley. big ben national park, having some issue there's. along i-35, if there are fires that are going to set, they will burn the foliage, it's very dry. you could have more of the fires developing in parts of arizona and even into colorado at this point. it is definitely a mess. could be a mess later on today. we have a whole different variety. we're talking about a moderate risk of severe storm into the northern plains. all the components are there. we have a lifting mechanism. the gulf of mexico is wide open, just a conveyer belt bringing in moisture. that combined with that frontal boundary and daytime heating could make for a very unstable air mass over the central plains. if you happen to see lincoln, nebraska, maybe into the dakotas, by late afternoon there will be a chance of torna

the national weather service expects high heat, low humidity in the region.fire officials report it's now about 40% contained. >> we saw it firsthand when it came into town. once it hit the thin area it was more manageable. >> reporter: as winds continue to push the fire into neighboring new mexico, authorities are evacuating the small town of luna as a precaution. arizona is also battling another major wildfire near sierra vista. the monument fire has torched at least 40 homes, it's about 30% contained. >> i was looking up in the hills because we have some friends and it looks like it's good news it appears their house, if the fire didn't get down that far. >> reporter: also in eastern texas, a big wildfire that started friday is threatening dozens of homes. scorching about 15,000 acres. >> this has been an ongoing thing for the next couple of months. it's dry out. the smallest fire doesn't take long to spread. >> reporter: nationwide wildfires have burned almost as many acres in the first half of this year as were recorded for all of 2010. so far more than

temperatures low to mid-80s right now. the humidity only in the mid- 30s. that's going to come down a little bit. temperatures will only get warmer. take a look at tomorrow, a little graphic we have for you. to the west of us particularly, ohio, indiana probably the mid- 90s. we're going to get to 90 degrees tomorrow and it's just going to go up for wednesday and thursday. we're talking mid- to upper 90s across the region. the only chance we have for my rain probably be coming here on friday and that's going to help knock temperatures down. as far as rainfall goes, a little bit scattered this weekend. bernadette woods has a look at those temperatures. >> unless you're underneath of those rainfalls, we're starting to suffer in the rainfall. we're about a half inch down in a month. we're only a few days into this month. so it's quickly adding up. we're an inch and a half down for the year. so starting out as a pretty dry june here. we do have a few chances for showers and thunderstorms starting to develop later on in the week. we have that forecast coming up.

what we have going on very warm temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds. when you combine all those ingredients, any wildfires that do get started up grow rapidly. it's about to get a lot worse. we have dry conditions, no rain over the state of arizona for today, some showers across new mexico and then an area of low pressure off the coast of california. this system is about to head inland and go north of arizona, that will be picking up the winds and unfortunately because it's north of arizona we won't get any rain. as we head in to tomorrow, winds gusting up to 45 miles an hour and sustained up to 30 miles an hour. these wildfires that are already going on, they have potential to continue to burn out of control. not just across the state of arizona but expecting fire weather conditions but parts of nevada and basically throughout much of the four corners and parts of utah. tomorrow another big story, heat that is going to continue in parts of tennessee down into missouri and parts of louisiana. highs in the upper 90s. it's been a hot weekend and it's goi
